Ken Griffey Jr...

It was one heck of a flashback seeing Jr in that M's uniform. His swing has not changed a bit, man did he stroke that ball into the seats. Pretty memorable moment for me. Jr was and is my all time favorite, as I was living near Seattle during his Mariner days. Of course, like many say...Its too bad he didnt stay...

I agree, it was sort of strange. Ken is 25-30 lbs heavier, but still has that same smooth, powerful swing. No wasted motion.

I saw him and his Dad hit back to back HRs vs the Angels. Surreal...

Indeed, that was cool. Twenty (20) years later, sure he's gained a few pounds, but does he really look all that different?

If he hadn't missed all those games due to injury, he's be at about 700 HRs by now...the best player of the 1990s hands down, IMO..

  • But did he do the roids? I don't think so. But who can be 100% sure. That is what stinks about this era.

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."
  • If it ever came out that he did, well then I will have lost faith in baseball. He was the best ever in my book...

Great opening day for Jr and the Mariners. Hopefully Jr can have one of his better years he's had in awhile.

I don't know about best ever but I will say best in my lifetime.
  • I judge best ever from who I have seen live... BUT if Jr had a little more of a workout regime, man...Imagine the #'s he woulda put up. I don't think the guy has worked out his entire life...

    what a sports icon

  • a true definition of the word Icon.

AND untainted from the steroid era, very rare indeed.

Easily would be at 700+ HR's if not for the multitude of injuries that he endured.
  • true, how about them homers yesterday tooimage he'll get 700- hes still a kid practically and hes been playing 20 years now

I certainly hope he's been roid free, but I don't know if we'll ever know. He sure has one of the sweetest swings ever!

No, you're confusing Griffey with A-Roid...

Could be a well-invested $2-3 Million for the Mariners!

Hope he reaches a few more milestones ....

    10,000 at bats?

31 home runs? (to pass Mays)

  • WaltWalt Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭
I think the Mariners made the right move dealing him, he hasn't driven in 100 runs since the year 2000 and has hit 300 only once since 97. HOF numbers maybe only
because he played forever. Would anyone ever had guessed back in 97 that his numbers today would be only what they are today? He has been disappointing
in the last decade, even if he retires drug free.

Anyone who think that Griffey is not a bonafide 1st ballot HOFer has no clue about the game of baseball.

I don't doubt that, but so much more was expected from Jr than just this.
  • Imagine if Jr. finally starting doing some cardio. Maybe found another 1000 ab's in his HOF career, plays till he is 44. Didnt Sr. play till his mid 40's? I still cannot believe Ken Griffey JR. is 40. That is just nuts!

That's like saying there was so much more expected from Brien Taylor. While his production has gone down due to nagging injuries, he's still a first ballot HOFer without question. Think Don Mattingly, with a lot more resilience (and talent).

umm no, Griffey was supposed to be the next Mantle, the next Ted Williams, the guy who was to eclipse Aaron's record. He kinda just ran down like an old
clock, Cincy gave him a lot of money, but it didn't really help. He has played 20 years now, you are going to have stats if you play that long. Disappointment
    in my book.
  • Hey walt, are you off your meds, or did someone piss in your Cheerios? a lot of guys play 20 years and dont have stats like Griffey. How many games did he lose to injuries 450? more? and he still has eye popping stats and was the premier outfielder for many a moon.

The next Ted Williams or the next Mickey Mantle? How about the first Ken Griffey Jr? He is only the 4th player in MLB history to reach over 600 HRs without steroids. How can that be disappointing? Granted, he did lose lots of time to injuries, but 13 x All Star, 10 Gold Gloves, an MVP, over 2,700 hits & 630 HRs are the numbers of a no doubt about it all time great who can stand shoulder to shoulder with Williams, Mantle or anyone else for that matter.

  • Dave99BDave99B Posts: 8,537 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think Walt needs 700 HRs before you move out of the "disappointing" category!

    You have high standards, bro!

Im not doubting the guy hasn't had an amazing career and actually up until 1999 he was amazing, but after that he just broke down and was
just average. Is anything great about Griffey after say 1999? Funny he hit 52 homers the year Mac hit 70, and then never touched that number
    again, I find that interesting.

and no one ever brings in "games lost to war" in a Ted Williams argument. He lost games during his prime, Junior was breaking down when he was over
the hill. Most of the stats you mention are voted upon..gold gloves (like that means anything for an OF), MVP's, All Star games. Missing are things
like batting titles and world championships. I don't know, maybe Cincy brought him in just to fill seats and not to actually win rings.

first ballot HOF, for sure, but should of been much much more.

Sandy Koufax must have a big disappointment in your book, too...jeez

  • just chuckling at Walt. who in his own life must be a huge disappointment to everyone around him.
  • What did I miss? Seriously. Did he sign with the Mariners again, or go somewhere else?

He actually did better then I thought this season. His OPS+ was 95. I didn't pay attention enough. I thought he was much lower than that. The dude is old though. Could be quite rough.

I can't make a steroid claim either way on him or anyone from this era.

Dissapoint? Actually, with all the pre career hype he got, he is one guy that actually lived up to it!!! Yes, definitely the injury years in Cincy were a bummer though.

Ted Williams is the pinnacle of hitters. That guy missed the war years AND he could have played a few more seasons at the end and done well. Not favorable for anybody when they are compared to him.

I'm with Walt. To an extent. I think a guy (e.g. Griffey) can be a first-ballot Hall of Famer and a disappointment. Griffey had an outstanding career and most No. 1's in any sport would love to have his credentials, but I don't think he attained the kind of "Best There Ever Was" status that was expected of him. That he seemed to be on that trajectory for the better part of a decade just heightens the disappointment that at least some baseball fans feel. I'm not at all saying it's Griff's fault nor suggesting that it's fair, but I can think of no other player in my lifetime who achieved so much, yet still left fans asking "What if?"

Actually, "First ballot but still disappointing" is a good description of Mantle. He was expected to break all of Ruth's records when he was young. As great as he was, his body didn't let him do all he could have (for various reasons, some his fault, many not.)
