Although I'm pretty sure Kansas City won't be in the race I think they will surprise some people this year.

  • agree, they have good young talent; sadly they lack an strong veteran presence to guide them. I do think they have the best young closer in baseball.

Lets not forget the worst team in baseball, the Padres

In fact, I'm hoping Pittsburgh will be the second coming of the 1899 Cleveland Spiders who went 20-134 and played their final 36 games of the season on the road and went 1-35.

Would Tampa Bay been on anyone's instant elimination list last year?
  • RonBurgundyRonBurgundy Posts: 5,491 ✭✭✭
Oh, and we can thank Boob Selig and his minions for this. Yeah, it's more competitive than it used to be but when 1/3 of the league has no chance that's a problem. Yeah, it's better than the NBA but that shouldn't be the standard.

Sad that once great franchises like KC and Pittsburgh get run over by the economics of the game.

are the owners of the KC and Pittsburgh teams poor? Or have they chosen the low-cost route to their present level of success? Tampa Bay showed that investment in player development and moderate expenses for MLB salaries is a workable model.

Nice one Ron, you are probably correct but I'd like to see some small market surprises this year.

Cincinnatti has alot of talent and some good pitching so they won't be terrible unless their bullpen blows up.

  • In a very weak AL West, you can not eliminate the Rangers. BTW, they are spanking the Indians right now.

Burgundy has a history of being way off base, as when he predicted Radford would shock North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

I'm a fan so looking through rose colored glasses, but I think the Reds will be in the race for awhile.

Harang looked great yesterday. And there's certainly no shame in losing 2-1 to Johan Santana.

After watching the Pirates score all 6 runs with 2 outs this could be the year they break the streak. I know there's 161 games left, but I'm Mr Optimist.

Baltimore, Kansas City, Washington, and Pittsburgh are what I like to call "Anna Kournikova teams". They play in beautiful ballparks, but they rarely win. image

Under Dayton Moore the Royals have upped their payroll to $80 million, more than double what it was for several years prior. Kansas City is currently a victim of having no owner, and then an owner who had no desire to do anything but turn a profit. I'm sure most baseball experts would agree that, compared to 2 years ago, our farm system is now loaded with talent. Dayton Moore is in the process of fixing the mess that was left behind when Ewing Kauffman passed away and in my opinion has done a fantastic job in just under 2 years. I may sound like a biased homer, but I see no reason that KC can't be what Tampa is in just a couple more years.
