WHY DOESN'T PSA HAVE A ALL TIME PIRATES REGISTRY SET?

BPorter26BPorter26 Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm very curious why PSA has not approved a ALL-TIME PIRATES Registry set. My only guess is the Honus Wagner being a card that is to hard to find and to expensive. Do you think PSA would substitute a reprint of that card in it's place? I really would like to do a set like this, since I'm a huge Pirate fan. Any feedback would be appreciative.

  • Wagner too expensive. The rest of the Pirates history is limited to like 3 great players. In other words, they suck. image

Good luck to them this season. Maybe they can avoid losing 100 games.

Come on, They have had a lot of great players. Recently none and they do suck 16 losing seasons and counting.

I'm sure if you request an All-Time Pirates registry set with the cards you want in it, it will be live in 6-9 months.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • If 3/4ths of your all time greatest retired before 1930, your team has sucked for along time. Plus, I see 4 MLB HOF'ers on that list that played a total of 1 season for the Pirates. Don't think that qualifies them for all time greatest Pirates.

Didn't say they all belonged -- just pointing out the rich history of a great franchise. Not to mention they played in the first World Series and have won more than most.

You could make the same case for franchises like the Cubs and Orioles (the first two that come to mind) -- but they too have a rich history and many all-time greats.

This is why there is no All Time Pirates set...

The bottom line is what mike wrote. Just ask for one and you'll get it...eventually.

There's no hard and fast rule that says you need to have all HOFers. Personally, I think any All Time Pirates set is probably incomplete without Dave Parker and Bob Friend. I would also probably want to have Van Slyke, Bonilla and Bonds, too. The early '90's teams shouldn't go unrecognized.

Do not use a reprint of Wagner. Use the first widely available card from his playing days. It would be one of the E cards (I'm not sure which one without checking).

The '32 U.S. Caramels might be a better choice than '33 Goudeys for the Waners.

  • I agree, don't put a Wagner T206 reprint into an all-time Pirates Set. Pick another Wagner card as was recomended above if you like. You can always put a Wagner reprint in your collection as a place holder.

I keep this Wagner with my T206 set even though it is not a T206 nor a reprint. It is from the 2002 Topps 206 set. I consider it more of a "tribute" card instead of a reprint.

    Maybe Bill Virdon?

And based on last night's game alone, Jack Wilson.

I thought about Bill Virdon, Which I probably will add.

  • How about Bob Skinner, John Smiley, Brian Giles and Jason Bay
  • NickMNickM Posts: 4,895 ✭✭✭
Danny Murtaugh and Chuck Tanner would be logical to add.
Barney Dreyfuss (Pirates owner during the early part of the 20th century) needs to be part of the set too. There are a couple cards of him - I think the Tip Top Bread card is the accepted first card. Branch Rickey should be added as well. I don't have a handle on which card is right to add for him.

Clemaz, I think Skinner's and Smiley are good calls, but Giles never won in Pittsburgh and Bay even though he won ROY I'm yet sold he's a All-Time Pirate.

Nick I agree Murtaugh and Tanner need to be on this list.

True, but Kendall never won either. I am kind of biased towards Phil Garner as well.image
