Useless question of the day: how many cards in a starter set?

What percentage of a set would you have to have before you'd call it a starter set? Technically a single card could be a starter set, but practically, what would you say: 10%, 20%, a third, a half?

  • I'm sure you'll get different answers on this.

I think it depends on the scarcity of the set. If you're looking at a tough-to-finish set (like a 60's Topps set), the percentage could be lower (20%). For an easier-to-complete set (Topps Total 2004), maybe a larger percentage (50%)

  • I'm about 160 cards into my 1969 set, but I don't think it's a 'starter set' just yet. It's just a collection of lots I've bought on eBay so far. image

I've always considered that a 'seller's term' to entice someone to pick up a particular "lot" of cards.

In practical terms - I would guess anything less than 25% of the set wouldn't get anyone excited about starting a new set.

    Considering a purchase?

No, I just noticed someone on eBay was calling 9 of 132 cards a starter set. I'd call that more of a starter starter set.
  • I think I would call that 'almost 10 cards'.

  • 40-50% of a set would qualify for me.

If the cards are graded, and it's a large set I'd consider 10% a starter set.
If the cards are raw, a starter set better be at least 25%.

I'm not sure why I think that way, but that's the way I picture a starter set in my head.image
