Sheffield To The Mets

Why?? The guy is not a team player. He will probably just got paid, get his 500th homer, than decide he doesn't want to play.

Mets add another mercenary? Don't they ever learn?...and I'm glad they don't learn...can Mets fans say "no playoffs again this year"

Well some of the 5Ws have been answered.

    We know:
Who - Sheffield and the Mets
    When - today
What - 1 year deal for the league minimum (thanks to the Tigers)

    But who knows
Why - why would the Mets bring this upon themselves?
    and
Where - where will the put him? Is he just a pinch hitter? If so, is the power he provides really worth the distractions?

My only guess is that Jerry Jones now owns the New York Mets too image

At 400K it's worth a gamble...they can always release him if he doesn't produce, but if he produces like he did a couple years ago, the move will pay off. I'm not a Sheffield fan, and don't like him personally, but Ryan Church is a bigger question mark as a starter than daniel Murphy already is, IMO, so I think the Mets are just taking out some insurance in case either one of those guys doesn't work out.

Edit: As far as him wanting to play, his agent was quoted in the NY Daily News as saying that Sheffield is looking to get as many ABs as possible this season because he plans to continue playing beyound 2009...the lack of playing time and injuries hampered him last year, according to him, so we'll see..

Yeah the Sillies don't have any free agents. <eyeroll>

IMO it is a good deal. Met's get a RH power hitter for the league minimum.

Mets announce today that they added Jesse Orasco to shore up the pen.

These guys are going to be on the Nats heels all season long!

For a team that won the division by ONE game in each of the last 2 years
their fans know how to talk crap. I guess winning is new to them.

The Mets will be right in the mix like they have been for the past 3 or 4 years.

You are one Santana injury from being the door mats of the NL East....AND we know the Mets are choke artists.

Santana has only played one season in Flushing...we made the NLCS without him and will win the World Series this season with him. Book it...I'd bet you, but that would be useless since you're a deadbeat, LOL...

Ah, it's great to see the Mets fans angry, worried, bewildered and confused even before the first pitch of the season.

Braves fans are longing for the past when they dominated the NL East, but those days are over.

Phillies fans are cool, collected and confident, and brimming with anticipation of back to back World Series titles.

    I'm luvin' it!

I read today that the Reds and PHILLIES both courted Sheffield.

I wonder how that sits with the Stevek's of the world?

Santana will win more games the Hamels this year.

The Mets will be right in the middle of it all and that is all Mets fans can ask.

The Sillies will not win another WS for at least 25 years.

The ghost of Casey Stengel is laughing -

"Can't anybody here play this game?"

"Don't cut my throat, I may want to do that later myself."

"I don't like them fellas who drive in two runs and let in three."

"If anyone wants me tell them I'm being embalmed."

"Son, we'd like to keep you around this season but we're going to try and win a pennant."

"We (the Mets) are a much improved ball club, now we lose in extra innings!"

  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
The new and improved bullpen needs to only win (or save) 2 extra games.

Instead of blowing 29 they can blow 27 and the Sillies will be where they generally
    are in October, sitting home.

Mets fans repeat after me so you'll learn..."Mercenaries don't win championships"...that's it, one more time for effect..."Mercenaries don't win championships"...there, now ya got it....now you should understand and hopefully you won't be so disappointed and crying your eyes out come September when your Mercenary Mets get eliminated from the playoffs again.

You're welcome - Happy to help.

i dont get why mets would sign sheffield but say no to bonds last year. signing bonds last year make way more sense and would of made playoffs for sure.

thats my rant. phillies fans beware of daniel murphy he will crack 45 doubles in that park this year. this kid is a flat out hitting machine. watch the way he works the count everytime up.

reyes wright murphy pelfrey all home grown talent. and more to come they doing this the right way now. mets will be on top for next 15 years

just wait till f mart and wilmer flores come up also!
  • Sheffield a Mercenary?

I don't understand how anybody can confuse signing a guy to be a bench player, with that of a mercenary.

Excellent teams and good luck is what wins championships. Forget all the other hogwash you think you know what wins a championship.

Like I said before, I am pulling for the Mets because the Phillies fans have shown to be brain dead and obnoxious. Their judgement is quite clouded more than any other group of fans(on these boards at least).

If JoeStalin, DrJ, and SteveK are the voice of that fandom, my gosh I would be embarrased to be associated with them.

    Well that was just unnecessary.

Phillies have always started the season slow for a number of years now, so I ain't the least bit worried about it - if the Phils are .500 at the end of April, the NL East race will for all intents and purposes be over.

How about that daniel murphy! 9 pitch at bat home run. then adds another rbi.

Isn't this Murphy guy one of those "mercenary" Mets players that SteveK is always railing about?? image

I wish Sheffield would be allowed to play full time. This sucks that he is in a platoon role right now at best. He is finally healthy, but he needs to play everyday to build momentum. His On Base Percentage shows signs of life, he just needs to be turned loose.

He can still run well, hit hard, walk, and steal a few bases even if his fielding has softened.

I don't wish injury on any player, but with Delgado out, Sheffield has more playing time and has shown what he can do. It looks like he is getting back to form and should be the offensive nemesis that he always was.
