I am going to say its a 1911 as we have seen a lot of blue 1911 lately. If its not a 1911, its a 1912.

OK, we have a winner but first let me tell you about this coin.

Kevin Flynn saw it at the Baltimore show and said to me that it is the earliest diestate he has seen and the best struck example of this certain date.

I thought many of you would guess 1915 or even 1916! because of its well struck crisp look. Check out the temple and cheek on this coin!

Congrats to Duane Blake and his 1914 guess. Coin is graded PF66BN by NGC.

How did you zero in on the guess of 1914 Duane?

  • Hey Brian-

Thanks. The tip off clues for me were the little die chip over the first "1" in the date, and also the striations on the right side field and the left field above Liberty. I was confused at first and thought 1913 because of the striations, and I did not see any chin striations that are typical in the late die state 1914s, but eliminated 1913 because of the absent die chip; also, I've usually seen the right field striations closer to the rim in the 1913s. So I decided it might be a well struck early die die state 1914. For those interested in learning more about the latest in the MPL series, I strongly suggest Kevin Flynn's new book, if you've not already bought it. It is really well written, and goes through many of the known MPL diagnostics. But there are always more to learn image
