Copper toned in wash

My wife usually, well sometimes, does the laundry. I'm not the most thorough person when it comes to taking coins out of my pockets. The other day I left a Lincoln Penny in my pocket. I went to put my pants on the other day and found the coin in my pocket. The toning on the coin was AMAZING... I have never paid attention to coins that were washed so I don't know if this always happens... I looked at the coin under my loupe and I don't see any scratching on the surface, but again I don't have a microscope, but it looks to me that some folks may be using this to tone their coins. Maybe different types of clothes and different types of detergent will make different tones... Regardless it makes me even more wary of toned coins... Thought it was interesting.....

The heat of the dryer can tone copper, I believe. It sure has done some strange things to these that I found as the tumbler worked loose on our dryer-
