Scam Branch Mint Proof on eBay

Not a proof, not even close. I questioned him on it and all I got back from the seller was a link to the price guide.

Needs to be shut down now.

I too ignored it until the price started to zoom. He's clearly trolling for a newbie to rip.

If someone is really silly enough to bid over $1000.00 for a scuffy, baggy, dipped out low grade 83-O then they really deserve it.
  • From the auction description:

"A 1883-O Branch Mint Proof Morgan Dollar can be worth around $30,000 in MS-60 and then $150,000 as an MS-64 according to PCGS. WOW !!!!"

If that is the case, then why not submit, get it graded, then sell instead of selling it raw?

I'm not impressed with the photos either, but PCGS does list an 1883-O proof. "An estimated 12 proofs were struck of this date..." quoted from Coinfacts.com.

Using the PCGS Price guide for reference is a violation of eBay TOS for auction style listings.

The NGC census has some Morgan branch mint proofs that PCGS doesn't have in their price guide.

Here is his response to my question:
"Its 100% genuine Morgan dollar. Regarding its proof or not : my opinion - its proof , you can make your on judgment based on pictures , that I have posted . I can send you more pictures or even video.
I CANNOT guaranty that its proof and my opinion and NGC opinion not always the same.
    Regards,
    Renata"

    What a goof.

It's looks from those poor blurry pics like a genuine coin worth maybe 40.00 - 70.00 on a good day assuming it's not heavily hairlined from cleaning.

I agree it is not a proof but please tell us exactly what it is you are seeing to indicate such.

It has a shot at DMPL, but never the less, with those rims, it is no way a proof.

Well, for one the strike is not exceptional. Branch mint "proof" coins were usually presentation pieces
that were produced from business dies that were new. Usually the dies were specially prepared for
    this striking.
This dollar is not a branch proof as it does not have those exceptional qualities that you would see
in a presentation / branch proof piece.

Stars are flat, hair above the ear is flat, hair over forehead is flat, E PLURIBUS UNIM is flat.
The reverse is a bit better but not exceptional.
Dentils are not detailed enough for a presentation piece.

Just too many tells that say its a business strike from used/polished dies.

  • The leaves on the lower part of the wreath on the reverse are missing too much detail for it to be a proof. That's what discreditted it for me.

Thanks guys. I suspected as such (especially the weakness issues) but wanted it fleshed out a bit. Appreciated!

Well, I don't think i've ever seen a proof Morgan up close. I'll correct this during the upcoming Santa Clara show. So I'm glad that other folks here can call out some of the specifics of Proof Morgans.

But to me, it looks like the obverse has devices which are very, very shallow. The stars and text are not deep at all. This could happen when the die is polished way, way down. And the fields are so shiny, it looks like we have a highly polished obverse die.

Whereas the obverse is very mirror like, the reverse appears to have your more typical luster finish. I don't think a proof would have such a mismatch.

And the rims are all chewed up.

Cameo DMPL obverse from what I can see, shot PL reverse, but a totally obvious business strike. Not even in question. Flat stars, crappy rims, soft strike typical of a business strike piece. Reported! (PS...side note-Even if it isn't a proof it's not totally awful and anyone who thinks this is a $40 coin, I'll buy these all day at $40...assuming it's not cleaned, that is.)image

The only person doing any scamming is the bidder thinking he can "scam" a seller out of a $30,000.00 coin for $1000.00. Anyone (of sound mind) who thinks this is just as guilty as the seller who put the bait out there.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • Just an FYI - the auction has gone "Poof" so I guess some good reporting got the job done.
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.
