OT We lost two pilots today at FedEx.

We hurl ourselves in aluminum tubes around the planet at 600 miles an hour. We do this for the love of the thrill. Then we get a dose of reality. Night cargo has its enemies...sleep deprevation to name one. This is the first pilot loss for FedEx proper in it's 36 year history. It's a small "gun club" and it's a sad day for all purple pilots and purple families. My heart and prayers go out to the families and to our fellow pilots who lost their lives today.
RIP

Thank you, comrades for your kind words.

The winds at Narita were 45 knots, wind shear was reported. The MD-11 has inherent design issues. The airliners slowly got rid of them and we bought a lot them. It's longer than a DC-10 but the control surfaces on the tail are smaller. I've never flown that airplane but friends say it's a bear in strong winds.

I'm on the B-727...it has a few issues on landing but overall it's today's DC-3, a real workhorse. It's a pilots' airplane meaning not much technology as far as "aviate, navigate and communicate" goes. There's an old saying..."if it ain't Boeing, I ain't going."

Tomorrow at 9am CST we are having a moment of silence for the two men and their families.

Sorry to hear about that loss Renman95. With budget cuts and cutbacks everywhere, each part of the workforce needs to reassess what their role in safety is. One cannot take it for granted regardless of how perfect the track record may be.

Also in the news was the killing of 4 Oakland police officers. My wife's nephew was recently part of that force and was trained at the academy by several of those sergeants who lost their lives.

As a flyer I hate the DC-10/MD-11, it has to be one of the worst aircraft still flying. But the B-727 was a decent plane, I have even been on one in the ex-USSR once.

And yes, if it ain't Boeing I ain't going! I flew on an ex-USSR Yak-42 a couple of months ago, noisiest and scariest POS I have ever flown on. Then there was the exit door that had been bashed up with a crowbar, but left there. And the guillotinesque cheap metal tray tables in front of every seat, and the non adjustable seatbelts.

It was very strange and solemn last night in the hub...stormy, hard rain, foggy. The bodies of the two pilots were flown into the Memphis hub last night and were met with a color guard and pilots in "Mess Dress". Inside ops were books to sign and pictures of the two men. I didn't know them by name but I remember their faces. I haven't had such glum feeling since I left the Marines. I lost 12 squadron mates in as many years. The bodies were then put on respective aircraft flying to their hometown. The families are now reunited.

After the ceremonies last night, several hundred of us strapped on our charriots and flew to the four corners...

Thanks to every one for their thoughts and prayers....and for letting me share this.

    Ren,
