1864 New Brunswick 5 Cent (Large 6)

I know someone that has this coin on hand. They have priced it at $1000.00 since it is the Large 6 variety and in EF condition..... HOWEVER.... I did notice that it looked like it had scratches on the OBV surface that appeared to come from cleaning. This is a hard to find coin so what would YOU pay for it if you wanted it for your collection.... The $1000 they are asking or go lower because of the cleaning. I know it is a pricey coin but I have not had a chance to look at an up-to-date Charlton on it.

Todd-the 62 edition of Charlton has it listed at $1200. This is the 2008 edition

Thanks... I looked it up when I got home also.. With a mintage of 100,000 total for the small and large 6... this is a tough coin to find...

Any input on what you think the price should be? Again it is an EF coin that appears to have been cleaned on the OBV only...
  • Todd,
Do let us know if you do get to buy this coin.

I can't wait to see some photos,if you do buy it.

Well... I'm seriously looking into buying it, only because the owner is the owner of my coin shop and would be willing to work with me on the price and a payment plan. I always hear folks telling me to buy the best coins I can but with a coin like this you almost have to take what you can find.... I was hoping that some of our local Canadian/Province guys would chime in and tell me what they thought a fair price for an EF cleaned version of this coin would be.... I know some would say they wouldn't own it because it is cleaned... Not a harsh cleaning but you can see the scratches, obv only, when you get it in the light just right...

    Hi Todd,

Current Canadian Trends for a problem free XF40 example is C$1100 or about US$880; VF is C$525 (US$400). I couldn't find any auction records to help estimate pricing but my instinct tells me no more than US$250.

    Hope this helps.
