St. Marys didn't make the big dance - Dick Vitale should take a chill pill

I can't believe that ESPN spent close to 15 minutes arguing back and forth about the fact that St. Mary's didn't get into the NCAA tournament.
Dick Vitale just couldn't let it go. A legit argument could be made for many bubble teams but at some point you need to just let it go.
I could say that Vitale needs to get a life but of course basketball is his life so that won't do. image

I am in Nor Cal so am biased toward St. Mary's. While I was disappointed they didn't make it I would say SDSU had a better case than St. Mary's. Though St. Mary's tried to schedule several good games this year, out of conference, they all turned out to be duds. Not their fault but just unlucky. I think Arizona would beat St. Mary's 8 out of 10 times so I think Arizona gets that edge. Not saying Arizona should be in as I don't think they should.

With the exception of Gonazaga their conference is 1-18 this year against AP top 25 teams. The teams that were on the bubble along with them had quality wins, St. Mary's lost 3 times to the Zags, the last time by 20+ points. Schedule some quality opponents and get a few big wins, then you might deserve a shot.

Schedule some quality opponents and get a few big wins, then you might deserve a shot.

They tried to but the teams they scheduled, who were NCAA tourney teams last year or the year before, all had bad years: Oregon, Kent State, Providence, SDSU, Pacic, Utep, Cal State Fullerton and Southern Illinois. They also scheduled, and beat, NCAA tourney bound Utah State. Most of these games were on the road. St. Mary's bad luck was these teams had bad years. So you shouldn't say "schedule some quality opponnents" as that's a tad unfair in this instance. Maybe you should say "schedule some quality opponents and hope those opponents don't all have bad years...."

  • The bubble team hoopla cracks me up because while it's great for the school and players, very few of those teams will actually make it past the 1st or 2nd round.

If you don't belong 100% and people have any doubts on your ability to make it far, you don't deserve to have the shot to play for the title. The best of the best are in, and that's all that matters to me.

Tell that to your football program.......

yo Larry, its not me being unfair I didn't make the selections, the committee did and one of the reasons they gave for not selecting them was their schedule, just repeating what they in essence have said. Just presenting their argument.

yo, tap next time they call me I'll pass on your comment, but obviously you don't know much about their strength of schedule. This year being the exception. image

Saint Mary's was 18-1 going into the 1-29-2009 away game they played at Gonzaga. Just before half time, while they were leading and outplaying the Zags, their sophmore point guard (Patty Mills who starred for the Austrailian Olympic Hoops team last year in Bejing) fell and broke his wrist. He was out for the game and did not return to the team until the second game of the WCC tournament. Had he not broken his wrist, it is possible that St. Mary's would have beat the Zags at Gonzaga. The team had a rough spot without Mills, losing on 1-31 to Portland, on 2-7 to Santa Clara and on 2-12 to Gonzaga by two at home.

After losing to Gonzaga by 2 points at home on 2-12, St. Marys got back on track and went 7-1 the rest of the way, losing only to Gonzaga again in the conference championship game (an ugly loss).

Had Mills not been injured, it is probable that St Mary's would have not lost to Portland and Santa Clara. It is probable that St. Mary's would have beaten Gonzaga 2 of 3 games, to finish the season 29-3 or 30-2.

Tough luck for St. Mary's. They had a good season. Maybe they will catch fire in the NIT and win the NIT crown. If so, they can proudly chant "We're #66image"

I agree with Goot. It doesn't matter. However...

yo, tap next time they call me I'll pass on your comment, but obviously you don't know much about their strength of schedule.

You can say whatever you want IrishMike. You don't offend me. I am a UCLA fan and my Bruins thumped your Irish like they were a division II women's team. So tap that!

As for St. Mary's, you are talking about two different things. Initially you said they should "schedule some quality opponents." I explained that they did do that but this year the teams turned out to be not so high quality. You now are saying "stength of schedule." I agree 100% that the SOI is weak. I am not stupid. I am merely pointing out that they should get some minor reward for TRYING to make a tough schedule.

As Good said it doesn't really matter anyway... because they aren't going to win more than a game either way so who really cares.

I was mearly trying to hold you to your comments but whatever. It doesn't matter. This is just message board. Go back to the coin board. You are probably more comfortable there.

    Tap OUT

larry, you need to relax. I got nothing against St Marys being in the tourney, would have been a nice story. Good for UCLA, the Irish also thumped No 1 seed Louisville by 33 pts, so what does that mean. image About as much as UCLA thumping ND. image Sorry if you can't take the criticism without getting personal, but good luck to UCLA hope they go far. image
  • I've noticed every year now that after the selection committee makes its bracket, ESPN appoints Vitale the sounding board for the small fry who didn't make their cut. He doesn't smile, he always seems pissed and he looks very old as he rants from his basement in Florida.

I would much rather hear from Jay Bilas and Bobby Knight than Vitale anymore.

Jay Billas is an arogant douche and Vitale was right for calling out his Duke card and bias against small conferences.

Saint Mary's beat Wahington State last night in the opening round of the NIT. They will paly Davidson next Monday in round 2. Patty Mills vs. Stephen Curry of Davidson could be one heck of a point guard match up, maybe even worthy of some coverage on Sports Center.

So St. Mary's can now say that they are at no worse than #81 (65 in the NCAA, plus the 16 first round winners of the NIT). If they win on Monday they can say they are no worse than #73.

You are right about Mills v. Curry. Should be a good one. You are correct also... it's all for the battle to be the 66th best team in the country! image

How can St. Mary's be any good? Their best player is a girl.

Tonight is the St. Mary's v. Davidson; Stephen Curry v. Patty Mills match up.

I suspect that the two star guards will put on a very entertaining show, even if it is ONLY the NIT tournament to determine who is #66.
