Share any Knowledge that you have on 60's stuff !

Good Day,

Was asked in the other thread about info on Mass Produced 60's stuff. Here is some of what I know.

Some that I am aware of are as follows:

1. 1961 Nu-Card Horror Monster Green, at some point two dealers in Canada discovered several cases of these which were made up of boxes of only the following sequence of numbers: 16, 23, 24, 39, 47, and 62. Don't know why they would have been packaged like that but know it is fact having been in contact with one of the individuals. There are 1000 to one of those numbers in NM-MT compared to any other number if the set. There is a similar problem with the 2 Card panels, whereas a couple exist in numbers of 100's to 1 of others.

2. As mentioned, 1966 Topps Daktari was mass produced but was not widely distributed. This product started coming out of the woodwork in Unopened Cases and Boxes in the late 90's. There are literally 10's of thousands of these pristine cards floating around. Centering is an issue with certain numbers in this set.

3. 1953 Bowman Radio Stars of the National Broadcasting Co. were packaged seperately in Even and Odd numbers (With some exceptions), Don't know why, just know is. For some reason the Even numbers, especially the higher numbers have turned up in High grade in a ratio of about 100 to 1 over the Odd numbers. A certin group of about 20-25 numbers make up 90% of all these cards you find.

4. 1961 Nu Card Dinosaur were one of the worst colated cards of all time. I have personally opened three boxes and another 100 or so packs. You would be lucky to get even one set of 80 Cards (1 Box I opened did not even cough up a complete set), out of a Box. Almost every pack has some of the same numbers (And usually 3-5 out of 7 cards): 1, 3, 6, 10, 24, 34, 37, 40, 47, 55, 56, 62, 68, 70, 76, 77, 78, 79, and 80.

5. 1965 Donruss Freddie and the Dreamers is almost the exact story as the 1966 Daktaris, mass produced, no distribution, 10's thousands have surfaced.

Off the top of my head those are few from the 60's that I know of. Anybody else?

  • Several years ago, Ron Wilson of Witcraft, had a find of several thousand pristine Civil War News cards. He took the best of the best and made up about 100 or so sets selling them for a few hundred per set (Don't remember the exact price). I've seen one of those sets and the cards were spectacular.

I guess most of them are squireled away in collections.

  • Good Day,
    Remembered another one:

    1. In the 1980's a Case of Uncut Strips of 1941 Samuel Eppy Smilin' Jack Strip cards surfaced, there are 8 cards to a strip and 16 strips to a set of 124 cards. There were 200 complete sets found in this case. I had dealings with the original finder in early 2000. He had sold many of the strip sets, and he had cut up many of them for sale at a Flea Market and had 35 sets left I purchaased the 35 sets from him still uncut. I have since sold 32 of them and have 3 left in my permanent collection.

Thanks for the info. I do have a question though. You say that the Daktari is very common in high grade due to the large find of the 1990's. You mentioned that centering is an issue with certain numbers in the set. Does this mean that a well centered card of one of those numbers may be worth something? If so, which numbers are they.
    thanks,

  • Good day,
If you look at the Pop report you can see there are still many numbers in the set that don't have a MINT 9 or GEM MINT 10 awarded. Any of those numbers you could pull a ten would probably sell in your $100 dollar range, but you have to have a really quality card and the luck of the draw when it comes to a Grader.
The main problem with the subbing, is I can speak from personal experience, I don't and won't ever submit any of those anymore, not when it generally is a losing proposition even when you pull a 9!!!! Why bother. Just no real Market.
