Is John Smoltz projected to be a 4th or 5th starter for the Bosox?

Just want to know cuz I may pick him up in the late rounds of my fantasy draft if he is.

  • I have also considered him in our league. My biggest concern other than him getting hurt, is that he will probably not get me many QS bonuses and his only real value will be for strikeout totals and hopefully a few wins. I don't foresee him pitching past the 5th inning for at least the first month of the season. If you assume he will stay healthy the entire season, he would still be a reasonable risk in one of the later rounds.
  • I believe that he will not play until June 1. Heard something about that in an interview when he signed since he's coming off of shoulder surgery.

"When it comes to Smoltz, the Red Sox have made no effort to get him in a game this spring, because that was never the plan. Their objective for the 42-year-old righty with Hall of Fame credentials is that his season should start somewhere in the neighborhood of June 1.

Despite his fiercely competitive nature, Smoltz is fully on board with the program.

"This team has a lot of talent," Smoltz said. "That's what makes this a lot of easier, knowing you're not needed as much. I obviously like to be depended on, but this is just a bonus here. They've got everything that you could possibly want."
  • Smoltz and red Sox trainers have stated that he may be in good enough condition to pitch by opening day. They stated he was a freak of nature with unbelievale recovery and healing time. Kind of made me wonder how he could heal so fast naturally.

Sounds like a free agent pickup vs. a draftee. Same for Samardzija here in Chicago - he is now a longshot to be a starter - even talk of the minors so he can work on his 3rd/4th pitches.

The quote above is from a March 9 report.

Given his age it may be a good move to have him wait. I haven't heard anything different here locally in Ft. Myers.

    Another quote from March 4.

"In actuality, Smoltz's Spring Training will start at roughly the same time his new teammates depart for Boston to open the 2009 season against the Tampa Bay Rays.

He'll pitch off a mound for the first time in late March, and progress to some type of game environment shortly thereafter.

"My Spring Training will really be in April," Smoltz said. "I'm always one that wants to be ready as fast as possible. June 1 is the target. We'll just see how it progresses. There's no sense in me being teased in my mind about anything other than June 1."

    Ask Arod
  • Not to somewhat change the subject, but I drew for position tonight and got 5th in a 10 team league. I have dirty words I want to say now.

I thought I remember hearing something to the effect of saving him for the back end of the season for the playoff run.

So to answer the question I'd leave him undrafted since he will probably see little-to-no playing time the first half of the season.
