Going to China

Ok, so I'm leaving for Beijing and Shanghai Monday morning. Saturday my peeps have arranged to take me to the 3 coin and currency museums in Beijing so that should be fun. Apparantly outside one of the museums they have a long row of dealers that set up, so if you have a special coin you need let me know and I'll see if I can find one for you while I'm there.

    If you wanna have fun, see how many fen coins and little sized fen bills you can find. They're around, but not used. There are 10 fen to the Jaio and 10 Jaio to the yuan (RMB). I dunno what the exchange rate is to the USD, but more or less a Jaio is worth about 1C and an RMB about a dime. So you see, the fen are worth about 0.001 USD and are now obsolete, but just recently. So you can still find them around for face or for free. If you find some nice MS ones, bring 'em back a do a forum give-a-way. I'll enter!

    It's true that they have fake everything over there but there are real coins to be had at very reasonable prices if you know what to look for. I generally protect myself by not paying too terribly much. That way I won't seriously burned if I got duped. The best defence is to know what the real coin is supposed to look like. There are still so many excellent fakes but knowing what the real thing looks like will at least enable you to sort out most of the garbage quickly. I have also found that if you show you know at least a little something you'll be treated better. I still wouldn't trust the better treatment too much but you might be able to some better material that isn't on display.
