And here is the second, hopefully it's slow at PSE and I will get these back quickly, I'm kicking myself because I forgot about 3 other stamps I wanted to send . Oh well next time...

    Are you going encapsulated?
Did they ever come up with a box designed to hold PSE slabs?
  • Options
    Encapsulated: yes
    Box: I don't think so.

    Good luck on the grades,
I used to have a nice set of the Kansas Nebrasca Overprints
  • Options
I hope you get good grades! Did you send in all those on the first list on the same invoice? You can send in the newer stamps (552 and up I believe) at a discount rate of $20 each if you have at least 5 and group them on a separate invoice. In my experience, they tend to turn these around faster too.

You have to have a minimum of 10, for the lower fee. I have some nice later SC# MNH stamps but with the prices these are going for(not much) I decided to squeeze in some of my earlier more potentially valuable used or stamps I had a liking for. Believe me I thought of every which way to make 10 post 551 stamps worth sending and then at the last minute picked up some better earlier that were more than I could fit on the first pre-552 invoice (20) The difference in the fee to me was less than had I sent a bunch of newer stamps that I couldn't get rid of for as much as it cost me to submit them (unless they all turned out to be 100J's which I highly doubt) In the end the decision made sense to me. I did realize later there were 3 stamps I forgot to submit with shorter invoice DUH!!!

I do expect to get some good grades on these, I sat on most of these for a year(not literally LOL). The used imperfs are very challenging to find with 95+ centering and nice cancels. I have yet to see a used 320 variety that would barely grade 95. Most of the imperfs I submitted should be 98 or higher but I know a few will be 95's maybe a even a 90. The toughest ones for me so far are the offset imperfs. I'm excited as the majority of these will go directly to my registry sets with a few left for sale or trade.

Sounds awesome edueku. I know how agonizing the wait can be. I'm waiting on a set that was submitted Feb 23.

Every so often PSE revises the rules on various submission categories. The latest submission form I have in front of me shows a revision date of 12/08. It states a minimum submission of 5 for economy service. I know it used to be 10. They're also now listing a "modern" submission category of 704 and up with a minimum submission of 10. I saw a separate flyer promoting that that mentioned an additional requirement that the stamps be the same Scott number or from the same set, although there is no mention of such a requirement on the new submission form. Cost for modern service is $8 per stamp, with a $4 reject fee if it doesn't meet minimum grade.
  • Options
Arrrgh... guess I had one of the older forms, seems they change them a lot. Maybe I should ask them to send me some NEW ones. Crap, I would have done my submissions totally differently. Thanks for the heads up.
  • Options
On that modern submission deal I thought it was a minimum submission TOTAL of 200 stamps with at least 10 of each Scott# submitted. If it is different than that now I might send some moderns in.

    What stamps did you submit?

    I'd like to see.

I would think PSE would be a bit slow this time of year and with the economy and all.
I like the quick turnaround option but it's a bit expensive for my budget.
  • Options
They used to offer that bulk service with a minimum submission of 200. I'm not sure if they still do, but it's no longer listed on the submission form. I'm hoping that the modern service is similar to the economy service in that you can send in a hodge-podge of whatever. I haven't tried it yet.

The submission I sent in Feb 23 included these 14 stamps:

    1 01197907 100299 145 1870 1c
    2 01197908 100338 165 1873 30c

    7 01197913 100818 470 1916 8c
    8 01197914 100883 509 1917 9c
    9 01197915 100886 511 1917 11c

    14 01197920 100525 274 1895 15c

When they are ready, they'll show up as cert. numbers 1197907-1197920. Most of them are used. The 287, 509, and 303 are NH (hopefully).

I'm just about ready to send in another group in the next week or 2.

I just got this email from PSE:

    PSE Announces Spring Discount

Responding to the times, PSE has announced it will offer its expertizing and grading services at a generous discount from April 1 through June 30, 2009.

Available on all services except its $8 Modern Service, PSE will extend a 10% discount on submissions of 1 to 10 stamps, and 20% on submissions of 11 to 20 stamps.

According to PSE President Michael Sherman, "PSE realizes times are tight, and is glad to do its part to help its customers through this period. PSE certification remains the best way to ensure the value and liquidity of your stamps in any market. While prices have come down some, properly expertized and graded stamps continue to provide both the buyer and seller with an unbiased third-party opinion and the ability to trade with confidence."

For more information on how to submit your stamps, call 949-567-1346, write us at P.O. Box 6170, Newport Beach, CA 92658, or visit our website at www.psestamp.com.

Those Pan-Americans are tough little stamps but I see you got a 95 on the 5c.

Thanks Zac. That scott 297 graded 95 is probably the highlight. I actually have 2 of them now. I was planning on sending one of them on consignment to www.gradedstamps.com

Thanks Matt, I was pretty excited, although some were imperfs some of these are still hard to find used that will grade as a 100. The 2 484 100's are the two highest graded now, another buy off ebay! I submitted them as 483's, not sure how I misidentified them.

Again, most of the stamps are used. The 234, 239, one 302, and the 328 are mint. I'm hopeful all those but the 234 are NH. The 234 just doesn't look right to me. Might be a regum. I'm getting the 20% discount off grading, so I'm excited about that.

I also have another batch (about 10-15) that will be going in shortly too. I also sent 2 stamps off to the PF for certification and grading. One of them is a really nice looking used Confederate States scott number 13.
  • Options
Well good luck, those mint NH are tricky unless they have perfect umblemished gum, I submitted a stamp that had two .5 mm spots you could only see at angle with high magnification that was called PH, but at least you know you are getting quality from PSE with such scrutiny, personally if I thought a stamp was regummed (which is usually fairly easy to tell if you have other verified examples from the same issue) I would probably not submit, but you never know if you don't give it a shot. There were different types of gum on the same issues so unless you are an outright expert it may tough to tell.

I'm going to try to put together a few to submit but not sure I have a lot worth the expense. The discount is nice, too bad it isn't for the modern ($8) submissions : )
  • Options
Hey Zac. I'm fairly new to the mint issues, as all I've collected since I was a boy was used. I buy the mint just for investment. The 234 is on extension from the seller, so I can return it if its not NH. I probably will be out the cert fee though.

It turns out the 234, the 302, and the 239 are RG. The 391 is actually a fake made from a 384 imperf. I was really hoping the 239 was NH. It looked good to me, but like I said, I have limited experience with these Mint stamps. I'm pretty happy with a bunch of the others though. Some good stuff to add to my collection, and some good resale stuff here to finance my continued bargain hunting buying binge image

On the mint stamps one of the easiest ways to get familiar with the gum types on different issues is to invest in some genuine mint low value examples of each issue and use them as a reference for comparison. For instance most of the Pan Americans and the 1902-3 regular usually will have lines of perf impressions on the gum , this is usually a sign of original gum. Not 100% fail safe but at around $32 a stamp , it might save you some dissapointments. I have some regummed Columbians whose gum looks nothing like the original gum examples I have.

Glad you got some good grades you're happy with, if you have anything extra to trade let me know.

Thanks Zac. I do need to get a few of the low value mint stamps to use as reference. I like that idea.

I do have extra stamps here, but my goal is to pay off my mortgage on my home ASAP, so I'm partial to selling rather than trading at this point.

The economy is really pretty bad for selling right now except for 98's and such, but good luck to you. It's always nice to get things paid off.

Most of these items were bought on extension, so if they don't come back clean I get to return them, and cert costs are covered. I'm hopeful this will be a good group. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Good luck, are you encapsulating? Do the dealers/sellers take back mis-described stamps encapsulated? That's the problem I've always ran into on extensions: 1 They won't take back encapsulated. 2 Won't take back graded items.

I'll be sending in a few shortly, not anything stellar but wanna take advantage of the discount, which isn't much considering grading fees went from $30 to $32 on regular service i.e. 10 stamps X $30=$300, 10 stamps X $32 = $320 - 10% = $288, really a savings of $12. Of course if you go 11 stamps and up it's a better deal (%20)

Hi Zac. I'm doing graded certs, but not encapsulated. The OG stuff goes straight off to graded stamps, so I don't give myself any opportunity to mess up the gum. Not so worried about the used items in my own collection, because I take great care when doing anything with them. I haven't been able to shake myself yet from the desire to mount them on traditional album pages, and so I'm still sticking with paper certs.

That being my experience, I don't know if I'd have trouble returning an encapsulated stamp. I have not had any trouble returning graded certs in the past. All the disclaimers I've seen on that say they won't take back a stamp based soley on the assigned grade. In other words, there are no faults mentioned on the cert.

I use latex disposable gloves when handling OG stamps especially NH. Was that your Pan Am that sold on Crippe's site? Pretty good price if so. That is a tough issue for sure.

Hey Zac. Yes, the 296 and 297 that sold were mine. He also just sold a nice 145 that was mine too. I was really happy to see them sell so quickly, and at a good price. Fortunately I still have good examples of those same stamps in my own collection.

Well I just sent off a group of 11 stamps for grading (taking advantage of the 20% discount). I will get the opportunity to see how well I understand grading. The group consists of 65s, 158s, and 184s. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Yeah Matt you did good, they were nice stamps though not surprised they sold fast(also 2 popular comm's).

Good luck Rolew maybe you'll do well your first time, although sometimes it's a shock at first to see what PSE's standards are compared the average collector's opinion. "Looks pretty well centered to me" ends up being an 85 not a 98.
  • Options
If there is any one stamp that can pull a 98 it would be one of the 65s. A pale brown red with no short perfs. I used photoshop to measure the margins and the left margin is .2mm larger than the others. It has a socked on the nose, light fancy cancel. It is a very pleasant stamp to look at. As for the rest, I have ideas of what lower grades they may come back as but I want to see if they noticed what I did about them. Time will tell. I guess about mid June. It is kind of an expensive test but then again I might get surprised.

Well I just sent a few today, might get some "OK" grades. Might make a list of them and some "predictions" tomorrow, might be interesting to see how close I come.
  • Options
I thought it might be fun to try to make some predictions too. If I can get around to putting up the scans, I'd be interested in some guesses. Could be fun!

I thought about showing scans too but I never seem to have luck with that on this site.
  • Options
Here's an attempt to post several scans of some of the stamps currently in for grading. Anyone want to venture a guess as to what the grade might be?
