Need ID for Arab coin

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,613 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think I've posted this before but can't find the thread. I just 'found' the coin again while cleaning up. Would appreciate any information on this coin, date, country, denomination, etc. Also, what does it grade. Not even sure if it is upside down or not. Thanks.

    KM # 246 Egypt 1868- Copper 20 para mintage 3,089,000 f/8.50, vf/$20, xf/$55 It should weigh 12.5 grams.

BTW you have the images reversed. The one on the right is the obv and it is upside down.image

    Egypt 20 para, AH 1277+9 ~ 1859 AD, KM 244.

The toughra (on right) is generally considered the obverse and you have it upside down image So looking at it righted, the wide "U" shape with three dots below is a "P" for para and the two characters resting in it are "20". On reverse, the thing that looks like a "9" actually is, that's the regnal year the date of accession is at bottom - in between it reads "Zarb fi Misr" ~ "Made in Egypt". Ottoman Turkish issues from this time also have the toughra on obverse, but usually have more writing going in a circle around the denom on back.

Upside down and obverse-reverse in the wrong order, yes. That's because he didn't read my lecture on Egyptian coins in your thread spoon, I'm offended now. image

Isn't arabic read right to left? Is so, then the obverse should be on the right. image

Yes but when it's upside down, left to right becomes right to left. Minus one times minus one equals plus one, and this was your second strike. image

Don't I get some extra credit for knowing arabic is read right to left?

If I were a teacher, I'd send you stand in the corner and read the Egyptian pages of Krause three times, for being a smarta$$ which just earned you your third strike. image

Yes, but the numbers are read from left to right, so I second what Syracusian said. image

I think the DMV in most states will only make IDs for real people, although you can probably find a sticker to put on it; something that maybe reads "Hello! My name is Arab Coin"
