1980 baseball vending rip (grades popped)

I bought 3 boxes of these.. got them at a good price..
cards are in very good shape.. nice corners and edges.. lot of centering issues.. as usual..
and out of the 3 boxes.. did not pull 1 Ryan.. weird.. and only one brett and yount..
but did get 3 real nice rickey's

Man, centering is a killer with this set. Not quite as bad as the '79s, but not great either.

    Great cards!
Good job on the Henderson Rc's
1980 set was always one of my favorite baseball sets as a kid.

Variations to look for. Taken from Here.

    Variations

    * 164 Greg Pryor has two variations of his card which are known to appear in this set, the first is an extremely scarce variation (#164a) where his name does not appear on the card face, the common issue variation card found in this set (#164b) has his name printed in blue ink.
    * 387 - Fred Stanley has two variations of his card which are known to appear in this set, the first is an extremely scarce variation (#387a) where his name is printed in yellow ink, the common issue variation card found in this set (#387b) has his name printed in red ink.
    * 424 - The Yankees switched managers just prior to the 1980 season thus Dick Howser appears on most cards while Billy Martin shows up on a few. The Martin card is very rare unissued version.
    * 547 - John Wathan has two variations of his card which are known to appear in this set, the first is an extremely scarce variation (#547a) where his name is printed in yellow ink, the common issue variation card found in this set (#547b) has his name printed in red ink.
    * 597 - Tom Poquette has two variations of his card which are known to appear in this set, the first is an extremely scarce variation (#597a) where his name is printed in yellow ink, the common issue variation card found in this set (#597b) has his name printed in red ink.

Beautiful cards, but I would take another pass through the cards you are thinking about submitting. Because you need to get 10s on most of the cards to be worth submitting from the 1980 set I wouldn't submit the Griffey, Reggie, Murray, Hernandez or Trammell cards based upon centering. I can't see corners from the scans but the centering on those cards doesn't look good enough for 10s (probably not good enough for 9s either). You have to be careful with the Hendersons as well. They look nice, but centering I think would have them no better than 8s.

I think the large scan of henderson.. is within 9 guidelines..
the others.. based on the corners.. could be 8 - 8.5
thanks for the tip on those others.. I will pull those out..
I need a $5 special again.. I have about 60 cards to sub from this rip..
min 9's.. most I think are worthy of 10's

maybe joe can pm me with a special for me? wink..
since I have 50+ on the group sub + 6 - 7 subs in jan
( 3 pending ) and another 3 getting ready to go out..

I never really cared for the 1980 set. I guess it's because I've only looked at the Rickey Rookie. But seeing your scans, it's a pretty nice looking set. Congrads on the 3 rookies! I remember my buddy was paying huge money for every Rickey RC he could find in 1991. I think he was dishing out $175 a pop, ungraded of course. We didn't know what a graded card was in 91.

What's a nice looking PSA 8 go for these days?

That seller is a jerk-ass. He once sold me a 'nm mt' partial 1975 Topps set that turned out to be ex-mt, and wouldn't let me return it. Buyer beware.

Therein lies the confusion. I think you're referring to Greg Bussineau (sp?), who from all accounts runs a very reputable operation out of Northern Michignan. This joker is someone different entirely.

After reading this post I went and bought 2 vending boxes from this seller. Guess What??? I did not get 1 Nolan Ryan card or Pete Rose. I did get a Henderson rookie in each box however. I was bummed about not getting any Ryans.

    WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
If you look at the box it should tell you from what sheets the cards are from?

    A B C D etc.

Perhaps the Ryan and Rose are from sheets not included within those boxes?

    Steve
    Good for you.

When you guys opened your boxes did you see that the cards were not searched?

Vending boxes have a pattern to them that can be readily seen.

    Steve
    Good for you.

If your talking topps vending theres no abcd...Thats early fleer issues in vending......Cut card topps cases however you can know whats in the case those are distributed in sheet distribution...

80's wierd for Ryan in my experiences its like a sp dont know why but Ive bought countless lots that I know were not searched and ryan is always scarce...

I new that quisenberry was probably not a 10.. but
cool story about the guy.. when I was about 9 at old comiskey park..
I was sitting in the front row in the outfield.. right over the visitors bullpen..
and I was watching the players on the field.. and quisenberry was warming up...
and when he got called into the game he said.. "hey Kid" and I looked down and he tossed me the ball he was warming up with..

I am proud to own that card and will display it in his memory.

One of my great baseball park memories is also in right field bleacher seats in old Comiskey. Jim Abbott was warming just feet away. Great seats too. Even Carlton Fish looked small from that far away.

This cards was a proof, likely cut from a dealer sample sheet. It "books" at $1000 in the SCD annual but I have never seen one for sale in the last 6 years. Definitely not found in packs/vending etc.
