Sometimes I can do something really stupid . . .

numismatically and ecomonically speaking.

I recently found this coin while searching for another coin. I thought it was lost for good or that someone stole it from my table at a local coin show. It was MIA for about 6 months eventhough I had searched for it many times.

After I bought the coin, in an ICCS holder, I showed the coin to a CAND dealer. CAND is the Canadian version of the PNG. I really didn't like the mark on the coin and this CAND dealer said some acetone should take the mark right off. So, the dummy I am, I cut the coin out of the holder and tried to remove the mark. It wouldn't come off. Then, after closer inspection, which I should have done in the first place but another dummy move by me, I trusted ICCS, I notice something else. Anyone see it? Now I'm stuck with the coin sans ICCS holder. Oh well!

Is it a different type of metal? Rust maybe? I am stabbing in the dark.

BINGO, scratches in the hair. It was not stated on the ICCS holder. But, we all know ICCS can't do any wrong.

    Hi Don,

I see what looks like a light scratch in the shape of a "7" going around the ear. Overall the coin looks AU. Send it back to ICCS. Maybe they allow light scratches for AU grade.

Holder or not, that's a pretty nice looking coin. I don't have a Krause Catalog handy just now, so I don't know what the coin is worth, but I'll bet NCS could do a number on it. They'd slab it with details and it could be resold. It looks pretty well struck. I'll bet there is a buyer that would be proud to have this in their collection.

(so where did you find it after you thought it was lost or stolen?)

Heck, I'll give you $10 bucks for it, ajaan. Get you out from under a coin you're unhappy with.

Absolutely. When Don PMed me my last 3 PCGS results on Ionian coins that he had submitted on my behalf, I realized that I had shipped him a coin that I had long considered lost. I initially intended to sell that coin raw, then it disappears, and then it shows up in the return list of my coins from PCGS to Don. It's just a bit of dementia, no need to panick. image
