1985 topps football

I did a bit of searching before posting this here, and saw the thread for the 85 football set didn't have a post since November, so I thought a new one would be in order. I'm returning to it after a long absence after no longer having the desire to work on it, recently picking up a nice lot of 13 PSA 9s for a nice price.

Is the demand for this set lessening? Or is it the economy in general that's hurting the card industry like most others?

I have a group of 4 PSA 8's that I upgraded in my recent purchase that I'd like to give to the first collector working on this set to reply. Just tell me where you want them sent and they're yours.

  • Jeff,

I put together the 84 football set and I have had many a conversation on the 85 set with fellow collectors, it seems the set like all others has its tougher cards in psa 9/10 quality, I know another board member here just finished the set, ( I feel bad I dont remember who) but it was a bear for them. I think like any set it has its peaks and valleys, and if they are not in great demand I would say you are buying at the right time.
Talk to PSA set guy (nate) at orange county sports investments, they have a handle on a bunch of cards for that set, they can be reached via phone at 1-714-373-9800.
Congrats and welcome to the boards and good luck. If I can be of any further asistance drop me a line.

The Link below will take you to the PSA Boards 1952 Set Build, I also have made 5 slideshows each slideshow is 100 cards long, card numbers 1-99,100-199,200-299,300-399, and 400-407
Link To Scanned 1952 Topps Cards Set is now 90% Complete Plus Slideshows of the 52 Set
  • Thanks for the reply.

I have a couple of the old roop boxes holding the cards now, and while it surely isn't a problem now, the 2 boxes combined will only hold 360 cards. With there being 396 in the set, I was thinking of pulling 36 cards out and putting them in binders using the pages they sell for housing graded cards.

The dilemma I face with that option is choosing the 36 cards. The preliminary ones I've chosen are the following:

-the AFC and NFC championship cards, along with the super bowl card
    -Passing, rushing, and receiving leaders
-Record Breakers - all 6 (these and the leader and playoff cards give a nice snapshot of the season)
-Bears Team Card with Payton, Walter Payton,
    -Mike Singletary
-Cowboys Team card with Tony Dorsett
-Broncos Team card with Elway, and John Elway
-Raiders Team card with Allen, and Marcus Allen
-Rams team card with Dickerson, and Eric Dickerson
-49ers team card with Montana, and Joe Montana
    -Ronnie Lott
-Dolphin team card, and Dan Marino
-Giants team card with Taylor, and Lawrence Taylor
-Charger Team Card, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner
    -Warren Moon
    -Art Monk

    What does everyone think?

Sure, sounds good...if you want to send me a private message with the cards you have and the price you're looking for, or post them here, that would be great!

I have a group of 7 PSA 8 cards (I found three more) that I'd be happy to send to any set collectors.

I don't have any graded cards in it but I do have the complete raw set. It's by far the most "radical" design of any of the regular Topps sets from any sport from any year.

I agree, the combination of black borders and bold fonts really stands out and makes for an excellent presentation. Throw in the fact that there are literally dozens of hall of famers in the mix and you have to be what I believe one of the finest sets of the modern era. I put together a list of the year they were enshrined:

    Dan Hampton - 2002
    Walter Payton - 1993
    Mike Singletary - 1998
    Tony Dorsett - 1994
    Randy White - 1994
    James Lofton - 2003
    Eric Dickerson - 1999
    Jackie Slater - 2001
    Jack Youngblood - 2001
    Jan Stenerud - 1991
    Harry Carson - 2006
    Lawrence Taylor - 1999
    Ronnie Lott - 2000
    Joe Montana - 2000
    Lee Roy Selmon - 1995
    John Riggins - 1992
    Anthony Munoz - 1998
    Joe Delamielleure - 2003
    Ozzie Newsome - 1999
    John Elway - 2004
    Warren Moon - 2006
    Mike Munchak - 2001
    Marcus Allen - 2003
    Mike Haynes - 1997
    Howie Long - 2000
    Dan Marino - 2005
    Dwight Stephenson - 1998
    John Hannah - 1991
    Jack Lambert - 1990
    John Stallworth - 2002
    Mike Webster - 1997
    Dan Fouts - 1993
    Charlie Joiner - 1996
    Kellen Winslow - 1995
    Steve Largent - 1995
    Fred Dean - 2008
    Art Monk - 2008
    Andre Tippett - 2008

38 cards...not bad considering there were just 396 cards in this set.

  • Hello Jeff and other 1985 Topps football collectors

    This is Kevin Roberson Elitecards
If you are interested I have about 55% of this set raw in Mint-Gem Mint condition. Now everyone says that have Mint condition cards, here is why mine really are.
#1 I collect the 1986 football set. I currently have the #1 set finished at a average grade of 9.67. Over 66 % of my set is PSA 10's
    # 2 I am very knowledgeable in regards to PSA grading and how they grade cards. I am also the person who did weighting of the cards for the registery for the 1981-1986 sets back in 1993
    # 3 I have sent in over 2,000 cards to PSA to be graded over the past 5 years with my average grade for my 80 football being 9.12
Here is why I have these cards. About a year ago I found a person who back in 87 opened alot( and I mean alot of 84 85 and 86 football rack and cello cases. He only pulled the RC's key cards from these cases like Elway, Marino, Moon, Rice and Young, all the other cards were put into 5,000 count boxes. He store these until I purchased them last year. I purchased these for the 1986 football only, However I figured I could not go wrong with the other years so I purchased them also. Here is what I bought.
    95,000 1984 cards
    16,000 1985 cards
    18,000 1986 cards
26 5,000 count boxes ( I don't even want to tell you what the shipping cost )
I spent the next 8 month going through these cards 1 by 1 and pulled only the cards I thought would grade PSA 9 or PSA 10. All of these cards were put into top loaders reday to be sent in to PSA.
Of the 95,000 1984 football cards I only kept about 2,000 Mint cards
The 1985 out of the 16,000 cards I only kept 565 Mint cards approx 55% of the set and the rest were
    doubles or triples.
And the 1986 football out of the 18,000 I kept around 1,000 cards ( several of these I have sent to PSA for my set and I have done very very well in regards to grades!!
All of these cards were looked at under a special light with a 10 X mag. and that is how I decided what cards I would keep.

If anyone is interested in any of these 1984 1985 or 1986 MINT cards please feel free to give me a call at 1-916-275-2897 or email.. elitecards@hotmail.com
    Thanks Kevin

    Kevin,

That sounds like a fun six months! I did the same thing with 1977 Topps Star Wars a few years ago and it was the most fun I have ever had collecting cards...

Did you ever sell these off or do you still have them?
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
