New State Quarter Poll

dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,732 ✭✭✭✭✭
I received an email regarding how PCGS is going to handle the Territory Quarters. While all current set holders will get the email, I am curious how others feel about this?

Here are the options listed:

1) Would you like to see the current Statehood sets continue with the 2009 issues of DC and US Territories and end after 2009?

2) Would you like all the 2009, 2010, and future issues be added to the current Statehood sets as long as the obverse of the coin remains the same with the portrait of George Washington?

3) Would you like the current Statehood sets be closed from further additions and new set compositions begin with the 2009 issues continuing until the obverse coin design is changed?

  • State quarter series has ended with 2008 as advertised by the US mint. US territories and parks belong in a separate new series. PCGS already stated they were going to be in a new series and I will not be happy if they change their minds. In summary option #3 territories and parks belong in a new series, not the SHQ series. We are all in agreement - I responded to the poll with option #3 - it is a STATEHOOD quarter set, not a U.S. Possesions set. Everybody who went into the registry series competition went in with the intention that it ended in 2008.
Don't you know that it's worth
    every treasure on Earth
    to be young at heart?
And as rich as you are,
    it's much better by far,
    to be young at heart!

    #3.

Though TQ (Territorial Quarters) may not last long, should they be their own series, or just a specialized set ala the Westward Journey nickels?

  • The 6 new coins should be part of the State Quarter Series. Those coins were added to the series by congress. PCGS has already issued them in "Flag" holder. I purchased them to complete my statehood quarter collection but I will not be going into the next series "State Parks" because I feel that the mint been putting out new junk for long enough. I am even sorry I started the Presidential Dollar Series. 36 coins each year in the series and that doesn't count the mints errors. They are flooding the collectors market with trash in my opinion. Below is why I say the 2009 quarters should be part of the Statehood Quarter Series.

"Among the numerous provisions in the omnibus spending bill H.R. 2764 also called the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008 [CAA2008] passed by Congress this week, is SEC. 622 requiring the United States Mint to produce six new designs for the quarter after the popular 50 State Quarters program ends next year. The measure was added to the bill by Representative José E. Serrano, a Democrat who represents the South Bronx and is chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee that deals with financial matters.Under the proposed legislation, congress has mandated that six new “state quarters” be added to the 50 State Quarter Program in 2009 . Actually the “states” are not states at all, but comprise 5 US territories and the District of Columbia. The House had passed legislation to extend the 50-state quarter program to 56 designs four previous times."

If you read that release it even says it is the 50 STATES program.

  • "SEC. 622 requiring the United States Mint to produce six new designs for the quarter after the popular 50 State Quarters program ends next year"

I think the operative language here is "50 state quarters program ends". That is self explanatory and in fact the US Mint has been advertising the last of the fifty state quarters in its advertising during 2008.

Putting territiories in a new series allows new collectors to step up and claim a high registry position if they can get the top coins. Including it with state quarters will discourage new collectors from competing for a top registry set as there are 100 previous issues to collect if it is included with states, and a new field of corn by starting a new registry as previously planned.

I voted 3 as well. I will remove the registry if they require additional coins.

This should have been a real poll
  • BJ Searls [BSearls@collectors.com] is the PCGS set registry manager that is conducting the poll. If you have a registry set of state quarters and did not receive an email asking for your opinion then just email BJ and give your opinion on either option 1) 2) or 3) as quoted at the start of this thread.

My opinion is item 3 new series as previously stated.

By the way, has Congress passed the law that would in essence restart the state quarter program for a second round; these quarters would have designs commemorating national parks or something like that in each state, starting in 2010? Obviously, this program would run another 10 or 11 years.
