It was only a question of time and how much, lots of BS to get where they were several weeks ago. Nobody came off looking good here.

It looks like Manny held out a couple weeks and got what he wanted (pay wise), which I think everyone knew he would. But I would not let the media tell you this was full of BS, such things happen with dozens of players in every sport in every year, most of which do not make the news.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
1) I think Torre can hold the reigns on Manny pretty well
2) Manny has 2 years to show big time production to land another big 2 year contract when this one is up. Now if Manny had 3-6 years, I think he would be more of the "manny being manny"
<< <i>I dont think you will see as serious "manny being manny" crap going on with the Dodgers for 2 reasons

see, I don't believe Manny's mind works that way. I think he learned the lesson that he can slack off when he chooses to do so, as long as he performs when it counts (last couple of months of the year). So I would expect a big second half of 2010 out of Ramirez.
<< <i>According to reports, deal still isn't done.. >>
exactly. The LAD could really screw themselves with the second year being totally a player option. We shall see. Boras will do well, at the very least. That's what really counts...to Boras
I wonder, with added Boras fees and higher CA taxes than MA taxes, if Manny will clear more this year than had he stayed with Boston?
Interesting point about taxes. There is no state income tax in Florida as well as NH, NV, TN and a few other states. Is it safe to say that all the ballplayers for the Rays and Marlins pay no income tax on their earnings? If so, I would think as a pro player, that would be a massive incentive to relocate to either team if opportunity presented itself.

if those teams paid up big like the NY teams, Boston, and a few others, there would be something to think about in addition to "chance to win"
I think MA has taxes of 5.3% on income (I do my mother's taxes each year and she used to work in MA, live in NH -- had to pay MA tax). No idea what the tax rate is in CA. I'd imagine players in Toronto have some sort of language in their contracts as to how they are paid too...Canadian dollars or U.S. Taxes must be different there too.
Looks to me like he finally figured out no one else wanted him.
Dodgers should have lowered the offer.

The problem Manny had was not amount so to say, but that the Dodgers wanted to give him most of his salary...or a good portion of it...deferred. Not to act like I understand the difference, meaning not that I have read the two contracts. However, I don't know anyone that would work for deferred payments....do you?
Not to mention $20 million now...is not the same as $20 million deferred. $20 million deferred might only be $10-12 million.

Add those tax rates to federal income tax rates [which will be going up (anything you make over $250K will should be taxed at a 99% rate since it is only "fair" that high income earners pay their "fair share", right?) under our new president and our new congress] and I suspect that Manny may regret playing for the Dodgers instead of the Marlins or D-Rays.
Oh well, it really brings me a sense of peace and comfort to know that upon signing a new contract with the Dodgers Manny will at least be a little better able to "provide for his family"

Just wondering how the Dodgers don't look good here?
