Looks PR69 to me, but what do I know? Clipped it out of the cello today to find this nearly perfect coin. $10 for the whole set image

  • Nice coin Matt - it's not really fair comparing to a cameo, but check out the black/white mirror contrast on the PCGS 1964 PR69 DCAM that is for sale at the Heritage Baltimore auction right now. You might want to go for that one too, and add a red to the red brown you just bought!

That type of toning is relatively common. PCGS wont go more than 67 on these.

Personally, it doesnt really work for me.

    That ia fantastic picture though.

  • Yeah, I did explain the grading of those coins to Matt, as well, having actually owned one almost exactly like it. There almost seems to be a cache of them existing.

But I am curious, Dave; if you know, what type of oxidation goes on that produces that 'cyan' color on that coin? It almost looks like a silver coin patina to me.

I dont mean to disparage the coin. Its more like some prefer blonds and other brunettes.image

I think the toning is a reaction to chemicals in the cardboard that is included with the original packaging envelopes. I have no idea exactly what chemical it is. Perhaps formaldehyde?

    You guys are funny.

Personally, I prefer brunettes, preferentially, dark skinned beauties.

Regardless, I like the coin enough, and the photo is really pretty, so in my sig line it goes.
  • Yeah, who knows? One way to actually find out what is on the surface of a metal is X-ray spectroscopy, which is a non-destructive test that can be used to get a reading on exactly what chemical substances are present on the surface of coins. The results are given in the form of a graph readout. Pretty basic technique - I'm sure PCGS has the device, and uses it already for that purpose.
  • For your sake, I hope that your wife is dark-skinned and brunette image

I have a 59' proof Jefferson nickel turn completely dark. Looks like a black chrome & mirror finish... Very kool coin tho...

Thanks for reminding me of this heartbreaker, guys:

Now I don't know what the OP's coin would grade at PCGS, but even raw it's got a wonderful appeal, and I could stare at your pictures all afternoon.. especially if I'm supposed to be working. image

  • I rather like the dramatic splash of color, but then again, I like my coins blue and purple.

Are you going to submit it?

    Eventually...

edited to add: It sure is nice to hold raw, even if I do have to look through a flip. I've had it out a few times uder a loupe, and under my lens, but mostly I'm afraid to breathe on it, leaving moisture spots galore. For preservation's sake, I will certainly holder it. First, I want to be certain that there aren't any more floating around like this in town. That way, I can submit them all. Fat chance so far. I have gone through a couple hundred more cello packed PS, SMS, and mint sets and everything is downright ordinary, albeit there are several nice coins floating around out there that just aren't my cup of tea.
  • That's a very beautiful coin!! Keep us informed on the grade, I hope it goes PR 69.

    edit: spelling
  • Matt-

It is pretty - can you run it side by side with the one you got from me for comparison?

The colors are very close, no?

OK Duane... Here's your old coin:
I find the coloration on the new one to be identical to this one, although my lighting isn't the same. They are using a much cooler light, IMHO. For mine, I was stuck with the dining room ceiling fixture, and a 1.5 second exposure. The flashes were much too hot for my quickie setup, and I'm far too lazy to do it right every time.

  • Thanks Matt-

That is cool! I remember the coin differently. Seeing that rainbow demarcation line between where the natural coin color meets the 'cyan' coloration is great in a Tru-view.

Side by side, one would think that these coins cam from the same lot. Very nice.

    Thanks again.

Just got the PR67RB 1961 back from the PCGS photo labs, and from what I can tell, there appears to be at least a two point difference betwen that coin, and the raw 1964. The darn thing's just flawless! PR69 is my humble prediction. Guess we'll probably find out in a month or so, as it will be submitted economy with a few other raw items I've been holding on to.
