US Mint Problems and Customer Complaints

I just finished a lengthy post on Mint News Blog which summarizes some of the biggest problems and customer service issues at the US Mint. All of the issues are known, and have been explored in various places in separate articles. I wanted to summarize all of the issues in a single post since it has not been done before. I also think this will provide the best chance of bringing more public attention to the problems with the hopes of bringing some positive change.

If anyone has some spare time, please give it a read and provide comments on anything I left out.

  • good article. One typo. In the paragraph under
Reducing collector favorites from the product line up

you refer to the one month sell out of the Buffalos as the 2007 Buffalos.

So you're the guy. Well many thanks for doing such a great blog - I really do enjoy reading. Past subscriptions to Coin World and Numismatic News were never enjoyed like this.

That stuff about the Platinum Eagles really brought back the memories. I got in early - ended up getting burned by the lower prices on reissue later in the year. Sometimes you win, sometimes not.

    Hmmm.

What a bunch of spoiled brats we've become!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Nice Blog rant. Hope the likes of Moy actually read it and do something about the Mint's service issues. Thank you.

Very nice. What I find unbelievable is that the Mint has no email address to forward issues to. Snail mail only, come on US Mint, move into the new century.image

One thing I don't understand is why people think the mint should protect them from bullion price declines. You buy bullion as a store of wealth, it goes up and it goes down, just like every other investment.

Can you imagine the screams if the mint had kept trying to sell them at the original price?

And I agree with the shorter return period. People are speciualting on the coins and bullion. If they don't think they have a bunch of 70's back they go. If gold/silver/platinum goes down after they order back it goes. The mint (using my tax dollars) is not in the business of letting speculators make money, that is not why they exist but people seem to think they have some constitutional right to it. If it had not been abused it would not have been changed.

Thuis is the PRIMARY reason I do not do nor will ever consider the First Spouse coins.

The prices on these got increased after the first run up of gold to over $1,000 and the price has never adjusted.

The unc coins were first offered at $419 each. Now they are at $641.
