When we shoot most coins we try to get them dead on. I played around with the camera yesterday. Got this series. The right angle brings out the best in this one.

I believe you'll find that the better images were taken in such a way as to have the light source reflect very close to the viewing angle, and the first image would have been much nicer if the light source was very nearly dead on as was your camera, so that the light would very nearly be reflecting right back up into the camera lens.
