From USA Today:
Jay Cutler is talking about his time in Denver in the past tense.
The Broncos QB is upset with what he says was the team's attempts to deal him for Matt Cassel on Saturday, and isn't confident new coach Josh McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders will stop trying.
"I liked it here," Cutler told the Denver Post. "I liked playing with these guys but obviously they're not going to let me have that opportunity."
The 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft, Cutler has been the Broncos' starter for 2½ seasons, but has yet to reach the playoffs. He doesn't have the relationship with McDaniels, the Pats' former offensive coordinator, that Cassel enjoyed, but Cutler did reach his first Pro Bowl last season.
"I'm upset. I mean I'm really shocked at this point," Cutler told the paper. "I could see why they want Cassel. I don't know if they think I can't run the system or I don't have the skills for it. I just don't get it. Or if they don't think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don't know what it is. I've heard I'm still on the trading block."
McDaniels emphasized to the Post that the team was not trying to trade Cutler. The Bucs initiated the trade talk and sought Cutler. "He's not the only person in the last few days we've received calls on," McDaniels told the Post. "We've received trade calls on a number of players, which is not uncommon this time of the year. I also think the sensitivity of the other trade that was occurring, with my relationship with New England and the whole Cassel thing, I think that stirred the pot even more."
ESPN reported that Cutler, angered by the trade talk, asked the Broncos for an opportunity to work out a deal with a team on his own but was rebuffed. He has three years remaining on his contract.
Cutler told the Post it's possible to salvage his relationship with the team, but acknowledged his start with McDaniels is definitely off to a rocky start.
"Anything can be mended," he told the paper. "I'll always play with the guys we've got. I love playing for those guys. Obviously, Josh and I's relationship has taken a few steps backward. I don't play for the coaches anyway, I play for teammates. As long as we keep the guys we've got I'll go out there and play. I love those guys."
