Heritage did something that makes no sense to me

There was a proof half dime in the Long Beach auction that didn't meet the reserve. The coin is now in Heritage's internet auction. I thought maybe this time I'd be likely to buy it; however, the reserve is now higher than it was at Long Beach. Makes no sense to me.

It's like when a coin sits in inventory for 6 months and then the dealer raises the price instead of lowering it. It's uncommon, but it does happen.

Are you sure Heritage owns the coin? If a consignor owns the coin, they can change the reserve. It also could have sold (away from the auction) and a new consignor put it in the auction.

Just some possibilities that would explain the pheonomina (if I spelled that right?)

I have no idea who owns it. If it didn't sell at Long Beach, it shouldn't have a reserve higher than Long Beach regardless of who owns it.

If you have no idea who owns it, it's probably not fair to announce that "Heritage did something that makes no sense to me."

You don't think Heritage can, and should, refuse to take a consignment with a ridiculous reserve?

I'm quite sure that if they thought it was ridiculous, they'd have refused it.

If the item didn't meet reserve in the Long Beach Signature sale, raising the reserve when the market hasn't gone up is ridiculous. Heritage typically lowers the price on unsold items like this and sells them on eBay or their own internet auctions. I've never seen one go up in price before.

I haven't seen this either, though given the vast quantity of items they offer it is certainly possible that it has happened on some things at some time without you or me noticing.

I admit it seems strange. Maybe it's as simple as a data entry error, or something wickedly complicated that would make sense if we knew all the details.
