Any way to improve/save this copper travesty?

Bought this on eBay merely as a curiosity, as it dovetails with my half cent
collection. It's actually listed in Rulau's U.S. Tokens book (#Z117A) where
he states that there are seven known. Less common than on large cents.
Whether this is one of those seven or outside of that, I have no idea.
Apparently only done on 1857 half cents (a key date at that).

The problem is that someone at some point attempted to make it "prettier."
It has that sickly pink color of overdipped copper. Yuck.

Would Deller's Darkener improve this piece? Any other suggestions? I don't
plan to sell the piece; I'd just like to give it a more original appearance.

    Two ideas.
Tried this twice, it worked acceptably on a late date large cent and not at all on an Indian head. Wrap it in several folds of tissue paper, the kind that comes in clothes boxes or gifts. Bury it in some planting soil. or in with a plant. Keep it moist. Leave it there for 3 or 4 weeks, then check on it. If it seems to be darkening, repeat. When you're done, use some olive oil or blue ribbon on it.
Or you could wear it in your shoe for several months, but it might be a little big for that.
