Is there a way to tell how old a thumbprint on a coin is ?

If they can figure out how old a modern footprint is

We ought to be able to tell how old a modern thumbprint is. Post a coin with an old finger print, thumbprint or possibly a toe print on it.

more visible in hand but this 72 double die has a fingerprint on the coat of Lincoln. It was on the coin when I pulled it from a roll in 1972, a circulated roll.

It used to be darker but the coin has toned down a little. It was always in a plastic holder, in a safe.

Run the print throught AFIS. If you get a match, and the person is dead, you'll know the latest date the print could have been made.

    Otherwise, you're on you ownimage

Also if you know their DOB you can find the earliest it could have been made.

You can tell if it is fresh or old because if it is fresh it hasn't yet etched itself into the coin and could theoretically be removed by acetone without leaving a trace. You might also be able to estimate how old it is by how deeply the fingerprint etches its way into the coin. It would involve figuring out the average amount of time versus the depth of etching though by getting a bunch of different people to fingerprint coins under controlled conditions and measuring the average depth of etching over time. It could be done if it was important enough to do so.
