Why is planchet underlined for code 93?
Also code 98 should say damage or tooling.

Yeah, I noticed that too...it's because I made it in MS Word and exported the chart as a jpeg.
The word planchet apparently isn't recognized as a real word. I'll fix it.

for 98- I'm just using the info PCGS provided. LINK
Don's post just said "Damage" too.

My pic is what the pcgs cert verification shows. Also notice the "pcgs list" has nothing for tooling.
  • I just received this one posted yesterday on a Peace Dollar that was probably too worn to determine the mintmark.

Code 98 does refer to damage or tooling (not just damage).

    Thanks!

The PCGS website absolutely buries some items. I see that this is in the FAQ, so it's not buried, but some things
are difficult to find. Why not list the full information on the grading page, or at least a link to more information.

I've updated the link in my original post to reflect a better source of information.

This has always been a mystery to me, why does PCGS grade some coins with planchet flaws and notes on the label mint error and then body bags others. Pinnacle for example has a graded coin with this notation listed for sale on their site, a 1922 Silver Grant commem.
  • Thanks for the new bookmark! Very helpful link.

    Great chart, thanks.

btw - the reason why some planchet flaws are holdered and some aren't depends on whether we think the planchet flaw is active, ie, falling off.

It's not 96 but 86. Code '86' comes from the old saying when something was "86 'd" or tossed out.

Why should a chart be needed? We don't post traffic signs like that:

    Driver: "Hey, Marge?"
    Marge: 'Yes, dear?"
Driver: "What is road sign '86,' I lost my handy road sign chart."
Marge: (grumbling about her forgetful husband) "OK...ummm.... Here it is. 'Road sign 86 - road ends in 1000-feet. One hundred foot cliff'"
Driver: "What?" (pounding on brakes) "Isn't it 'Rest Stop Ahead?'"
Marge: "No! Look here, in the code cha...........AAAAAAHHHHHHHhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeee......."

How many collectors or even dealers at a large coin show have the code numbers memorized? Not many.
