  • I'm assuming you mean the "S" mint mark. Note that the 79 type 1 is easy, but I use the "drawing" for the 81 types. It's damned hard to get a decent pic of the 81 MM's; here's what I use:

The 79s are easy to spot; they will have a filled MM (type 1)
or a clear MM (type 2).

The 81s can be very confusing because the type 1 can be found with a filled
or clear MM. The two types are determined from the configuration of the MM only.
You will need at least a 20x glass. Many of the photos seen on eBay ect. can be
    misleading or in total error.

It would be a nothing thing if it were not for the 1 to 30/40 price swing between
the two types. Cherrypicking one of these for 10 bucks can make a good day of it.

Talk about popular yet microscopic rarities! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • I've got some 81 type 2's. I'll see if I can get some good pics of the MM.
  • Yet you can see a 1971-D FEV with bare eyes ( and mine aren't that good) and Hmmm image

In addition to some features which are best enjoyed with a loupe or scope, the 1971-D FEV has many differences and naked eye pick up points scattered about, not just one as with the 79 and 81 T1/T2's.

  • Thanks for the replies guys

Last night I had a little extra time and I tired to use a 15X loop to take a few pictures (didn't work to good)

I have to take a few again with better lighting and take the other pictures maybe somebody will post some good shots later on tho

Locating an EDS mintmark on the type one would be the key. If it's mushy or filled in, what would be the purpose of collecting those varieties. image

This is a 1981 Proof set I have had for awhile now. I have never figured out
if they are T1 or T2 or mixed?

I Have received different opinions and today decided to put the old Dino-Lite to use.

Maybe someone can throw in an opinion or two?

Dino-Lite!!! Very impressive photos and the equal of those taken thru
    a microscope.
All of your photos show the type 1 MM. The second photo shows an
early type 1 clear MM. Its all the result of poorly ground and polishied
working dies which were very small and tough to work.
After 82 the MM was incorporated into the master galvono.
