I'd say MS63 or 64. This date is VERY hard to locate in higher grades. I went thru 25 BU rolls once, and never did find one that graded MS65 with PCGS.
I'm the Proud recipient of a genuine "you suck" award dated 1/24/05. I was accepted into the "Circle of Trust" on 3/9/09.

It's tough to tell with the large pics, but I'd say a 64 maybe a 65 if the luster's there image

Nice coin but the nicks on the bust will cost a point of two. Maybe a 65.

Ken, it's a nice coin .... much rarer than the 3.1 Million mintage figure would lead people to believe.

The 55-D is right behind the 39-S & 40-d in total mintage BUT the vast majority of 55-D are of notoriously
poor quality from a bad mix at the mint or really beat up which means that many such pieces were not
highly treasured and sent to smelters' pots.

This only served to make the existing pieces that much fewer. In time this will see this coin surpass the 39-S
& 40-D in scarcity. It's simply a numbers game and matter of supply vs demand.

I believe this piece will probably grade PCGS 64 due to the number of hits, nicks and distractions.

It's a very scarce piece, poised to increase in value dramatically.

Great coin to have graded and stash away. It's day will come!

It's just a matter of Time! imageimage
  • Fantastic picture. I can see just where the faint leaves go on the A reverse.
Consider the leaf by the rightmost (viewer's) tailfeather. Here is one pick up point which is unique to each type.
Type A - The leaf just reaches up, comes to a point and touches the tailfeather, as in your coin OR it fades out and disappears - my coins.
Type B - The leaf is cut off square. Hence it does not reach the tailfeathers and has no point.
Type C - The leaf has a very sharp point, and goes to the right of the tailfeather and above its end.

Herb! I think you posted your message to the wrong thread!

I have been thinking about that one leaf lately and I couldn't find an "A" that showed it clearly. Eureka! It is here. So I posted.
It might bettter fit a "B" or "C" thread, but it is here I have the illustration.
  • ms65....the obverse has a couple dings but the reverse looks pretty clean IMO

The Reverse has quite a few distractions in the focal area as well.

    Have a closer look.
