All key date 7070?

Wondering if anyone has ever done this, while expensive, would this be neat or what? image

Assuming available funds, you could have a real spectacular collection here, and also, look at the swing between common date stuff and keys, it's staggering.

It's not really very practical. The Dansco album is not an archival quality environment. I'm OK with that with the $5 to $500 coins in mine, but would I really want an 1804 cent in there? A 56 flyer? A '78 shield nickel? An '85 Liberty nickel, an 01-S Barber, a 1916 SLQ ... an 1852 seated dollar (or do you throw a Gobrecht in its place?!)

I think you see my point. The risk becomes significant.

It's difficult to find flaw with this logic. I suppose I may end up with a few "keys" or "error" coins in a few slots, but it's highly unlikely to do a 7070 with all keys. Low grade problems might be a cool endeavor, though image.

$80k 7070 Type Set on eBay

Pahrump coins has about the most expensive one I've seen... some key dates in there too, but not all.

Its a shame slabs were not just smaller than the coin itself, so a nice album collection could be done with slabs. I know there are 'albums' to hold slabs - but nine coins a page is not much.

I think the idea of a key date 7070 would be a great challenge that could last a lifetime.

Not many people have the 1909 sVDB and 55 DDO in their type sets.

I've got my 7070 about 80% full of coins with clipped planchets. I owe the board a bunch of pictures. image

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

  • Not to hijack the thread... but...

Sean, you put together the some of the neatest sets. I love your clipped Lincoln set. Any updates there? I would love to see those holes filled, and would definitely give you any of these I found.

  • To the OP, yes, having a 7070 of all key dates would be significant and a pleasure to own, but I agree with mirabela, the risk is too great. I would not crack those out, even though I have cracked a few keys to put in other Dansco's to complete a set.

I would consider cracking out all problem (Genuine) keys to put in a 7070 though, but don't know that I'd want a complete 7070 of key date problem coins.

If you had an excessive amount of money, if resale was of no concern to you .... sure, why not go for it? !

I like nicer dates for my 7070 - all circulated though.

  • Does anyone out there have pics of an old Dansco 7070 album that has had coins in it for say, 10 or 20 years. I'd like to see the pics just to get an idea of how the coins age in the album. If anyone can share their experience with this it would be great!

I like to put inexpensive coins in my albums so I can keep the albums at home without concern. The expensive coins all live in the SDB. I'd be uncomfortable keeping a 7070 full of key dates in my home.

I have considered doing this. The problem is that with my funding it would be a low grade set, which would actually be really cool, but nothing outrageous. I think an equally interesting idea would be to put a set together that contained semi-key dates. For instance instead of putting an 1877 IHC, you put the 1909-S IHC. It still gives you quite a challange, and would ultimately be a spectacular set, but wouldn't be unattainable, even in nicer grades. There are a lot of semi keys that are extremely rare.
