I recommend finding a copy of the Charlton Catalogue of Canadian Coins. The photos inside show the varieties very clearly.

Here is a VERY good website with lots on Canadian coins. This page is for the 1965 Cent and has some HUGE and UP CLOSE pictures!

Actually, the variety you are probably thinking of is the small beads/large bead varieties of the 1965 one cent. There are also varieties of the 5 in the date, these being the blunt and pointed.
