Just found out from a related thread that these last 2 numbers mean something, wish they labeled it such.

Altered surfaces. You know, PCGS does provide this information on their website. It is in the same place that defines what VF20 means.

Altered surface to me mean things like thumbed, puddied, tooled etc...

    Cleaning is pretty specific

If there is more than one issue they will just list the stronger one.

A coin may have multiple problems. PCGS only notes the problem that they consider to be the most serious.

Edited to add that I just noticed BECOKA had already said basicly the same thing.image

In the future realone if you forget these codes, PCGS has them here on their grading page. You guys ever read anything our host puts up other than when they participate in the forums. Both NGC and PCGS have some interesting and useful info.

My understanding of "thumbing" is rubbing your thumb against your nose to collect skin oils, then wiping your thumb across the coin. The oils will mask small hairlines (and I believe they will darken over time). Often done to the cheek on Morgans.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

The friction of rubbing the cheek is to dull the bag marks which tend to be shiney so they won't stand out against the frostly background of the cheek.
