Remember, although Jersey were the kings of the left wing lock or the trap (whichever you'd prefer) in the 1990's, the Habs did it first when almost no other teams in the league were doing it (in the wild west shoot-out decade of the 1980's where even goalies like Richard Sevigny and Bryan Hayward were winning Jennings trophies)--Roy was the beneficiary of this for 8 seasons. As well, all you have to do is look at International competition to see how highly both goalies are regarded;
1987 Canada Cup (Fuhr, Hextall and Hrudey, Roy wasn't even good enough to edge out Hrudey?) Canada won the tourney.
1991 Canada Cup (Mr Billy Ranford was unreal, again, Roy DID NOT make the team). Explained as an injury, we all know he wasn't injured.
When finally Roy did play, every team he was on LOST the Championship or DID NOT make the final (remember Nagano?). Remember as well, the Habs hadn't lost to the Boston Bruins in the playoffs for 36 YEARS (that's THIRTY-SIX), but with Roy at the helm of the Habs, he failed to get them past the Bruins in EACH of the playoffs series he faced them from 1988 on--I'm not joking.
In 1990, I would have happily traded Roy straight up for Fuhr, and there were actually rumblings back then but by that time Fuhr was 30 and he wasn't French Canadian, so it didn't happen. Fuhr ended up with the Leafs instead. Brodeur makes Patrick Roy look like Patrick Lalime actually.
I could write a book on this, I'm serious.
Over-rated Roy, wish Marty had been a Hab.

Bobby Orr said he was the best he ever played against.
<< <i>Brodeur will have all the records, but I don't think anyone was as dominant as Dryden. 6 Stanley Cups in an 8 year career. 5 Vezina trophies.

Dryden played with about half of the NHL HOF on his team while Brodeur has played with 2 for most of his career (Stevens and Niedermayer). It was often said that Broduer benefited from the "trap" and having a great blueliner like Stevens in front of him, but it's interesting to note that Brodeur has 3 shutouts this season in a matter of 10 full games played without Stevens or Neidermayer.
Since Nieds and Stevens left, Broduer has average 45 wins per season and a GAA of 2.17 (less than his career average) with what has been described as a weak defensive corps. Can anyone name three defensemen on the Devils? I didn't think so (Colin White, Paul Martin, Bryce Salvador, Mike Mottau and Johnny Oduya have been the only constants this season with Anssi Salmela, Sheldon Brookbank, Jay Leach and Andy Greene filling in). Not quite names that put fear into the minds of hockey fans.
Did Dryden or Hasek or Roy ever have back to back seasons with a GAA under 2.00? Nope! Brodeur is the only player to do it since Sawchuk did it from 1950-55. In fact, how many sub 2.00 GAA seasons did Dryden and Roy have? Dryden NEVER had one and Roy only had one in his next to last season.
Dryden was a great goalie, but he also had a far superior team in front of him.
We could argue this until the cows come home and never come to a definitive answer, but in a Game 7, I'll still take Brodeur.
As of this minute, Brodeur is 5 wins away from tying Roy and 4 shutouts away from tying Sawchuk.
