77 and 78 Down--1938 Ogden's Actors Natural and Character Studies and 1939 Gallaher Completed in PSA

My collection has increasingly encompassed non-sports and thanks to non-sports collector extraordinaire Keith Pennington I am able to complete 2 more sets with each card PSA 8 or better, my 77th and 78th.

For what was an extremely fair price, Keith sold me two complete sets each card psa 8 or better and one set with all 8s and above and one seven and a partial sets of all 8s and 9s.

1)1936 Gallaher Film Episodes--21 9s, 28 8s and 1 7(WC Fields, Laurel & Hardy, Cagney, Temple
2)1938 Ogden's Actors Natural and Character Studies--1 10, 34 9s, 15 8s(Fields, Carloff, Olivier)
3)1939 Gallaher My Favourite Part--42 9s, 6 8s(Gable, Garland, Tracy, Davis)
4)1935 Bridgewater-14 8s and 9s(Mae West, Crosby, Astaire, Gable)

For 70+ year old cards they are in staggering condition. I have another 20 or so partial sets or sets with some 7s or below that need upgrading from this era (1935-40). The cards are not easy to find individually graded however and are most often sold as sets on ebay U.K. I love the old film stars, however, and where else can you get mint 70+ year old cards that you love for under $20 per card.

The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goal.

I for one think it is pretty cool to see what board members are collecting. You might think it is bragging, but heck if they can afford it then better for them. I can enjoy a good collecting/set addition story from a board member who is collecting one set or hundreds of sets. Contracts to Davalillo!!

Man, I got sooooooooooooooooooo moved, I decided to drop $200+ on the $7 February special.

I subbed 25 of the 1939 Godfrey Phillips Ltd. "Beauties of To-Day".

These oversized cards are knockouts, ... in more ways than one! image

...If I didn't decide to post this message, I never would have realized this was a 36 card set, not a 25 card set. So I "dug-out" and will sub the remaining 11 cards (26-36). Silly me! (now I'll drop another $100 to PSA!) image

BJ - Move on to somewhere else.

Davalillo - congrats, but why don't you have early 70's baseball and football? Was 1969 the general cut-off year?

    Joe,

I have every mainstream baseball and football set complete with just stars ungraded 1970-1992--then I stopped. There are a couple of exceptions--either I perceived the sets to be more difficult or more valuable--or I just bought the sets completely graded. Also each person can have his own definition but I define vintage and semi-vintage being 1970 and earlier.Lastly, did not think it made economic sense past then to grade the cards.

    Jim
  • Count me as one more collector who likes to hear about completed sets. I enjoy sharing in the sense of accomplishment.
    Congratulations and keep 'em coming.

    Carew29,

Nice grades and congrats on the #1 set rating. I sent in a partial set of raw Rothman's a while ago--my grades were not as good as yours but I will post them.

That looks like a beautiful set of Lloyd's Cinema Stars--I do not have any of those. Good luck and keep us posted.

I sent a few these as well in for my mom who was a fan of Pinnochio. Made of very thin paper--like the 15' Cracker Jack cards--but thinner!! None of these have ever been graded. Check out the story on the back of the card
