Local Dealer - Such a tease!

I went to a local shop today, and was immediately drawn to an array of beautifully toned morgans. They ranged in grades from MS63 to MS66 (from what I could tell) and all had magnificent rainbow toning. After staring at them through the case for probably 20 minutes, I finally asked if I could see one of them, an 1883 NGC MS63*. Well, guess what... NOT FOR SALE! They're out of his personal collection. Made me mad
So I bought a MS62 DMPL 81-O and left

I'm not sure of his name. He's Russian, if that narrows it down.

<< <i>Silly of him not to have a NOT FOR SALE sign. >>
That's what I thought. At least give some indication that I won't be going home with one of these coins before I waste my time drooling over them.

If it is in the case it is implied it is for sale.
Or, he is running a museum and not a shop.

When collectors go to coin shops they want to be able to buy what is on display. The dealer wasted your time. Don't go back.
<< <i>May be that dealer felt you couldn't afford it and said it was from his own collection however, I do find this odd by this dealers standards. >>
That's definitely not the case, I was in a few weeks ago and made a rather large purchase. He knows me well.
I'll go back, I've been dealing with him for quite a while, I was just disappointed to see that these weren't for sale.

<< <i>Even if they're not for sale, and not even labeled that they're not for sale, I'd still be happy to see them....as opposed to the usual tray upon tray of circulated type that you usually encounter at B&Ms. >>
I agree- it's always nice to see interesting stuff even if it's not for sale. I'd never have guessed that a dealer displaying "not for sale" coins in his shop would be something that would upset people, but I suppose you never can tell.
Maybe coin store owners shouldn't have any coins at all out on display, and just show customers the specific coins they ask to see. That way, there'd be no chance of a prospective buyer wasting his time looking at coins he can't buy.

I guess for anyone looking for a reason to be upset about something, that would be as good as any...

<< <i>His excuse was that someone asked him to bring them to look at, but even then I think they should be behind the counter somewhere. >>
Didn't he offer to order any for you?
I actually find that irratating myself.
