Behind the table for the first time at the Franksville coin show -- anyone going?

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
I will be doing my first show as a seller in Franksville, WI on Sunday 2/22/09. It should be fun.

I'm a bit nervous and exited at the same time.

Anything I should know?

Anyone from the message boards going?

  • From what I've read, you need to watch people closely, especially if you've never done this before. People will steal things in a heartbeat. That doesn't mean you shouldn't trust anyone, just be careful.

    Tony,

If possible, take someone else with you...wife/son/daughter/friend/boyfriend/whatever image
That way, if you need to use the facilities, someone can be there to watch your stuff.......just a thought

Also, take plenty of change (coins and low denom bills) as you never know what you will need.....I have gone after going to the casino and only had hundreds on me...and wanted to buy low priced coins when nothing else was worth it. If you can't supply change easily, you could lose out.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    LOL

I'm one of those people who really don't feel comfortable if I skip a shower.

good luck on the other side of the table

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Try not to act like a rookie. Act like you've been there before.

I've done one show and quickly found out that other dealers will treat all rookies like fresh meat. They will decend upon your table before the show starts and pick it clean. While this is going on they will act like they are entitled to a dealer discount.

I can say I didn't make very many friends. I had my inventory pre-priced and my business model didn't include dealer discounts.

What ended up happening was, other dealers, acting like they were giving me advise, were constantly telling me my inventory was overpriced.

As for the show itself, the general public was easy and fun to deal with, it was the other dealers that were the pain.

While well intentioned.....I can honestly say, back in my show days, I made much, MUCH, more money on dealers than I did from public.
Remember, from a business standpoint, the object of the game is to generate profits !
In my experience, these profits came quickly from dealers. As a rule, dealers will not agonize. It's 'yes' or 'no', next case....Simple stuff.
If you stand to make a profit, move the coin. There are always MORE coins.....
    Most importantly, have fun !

Better yet, DON'T shower first...that way you will fit right in with the other dealers image

  • I'm not saying don't do business with others dealers. I'm just saying other dealers are quick to take advantage of any weakness in any new dealer.

Dealing with other dealers should involve mutual respect and, in my experience, I just didn't see any of that.

If I had to do it all over again, I would walk in with a plan, not ask too many questions, tell people this is my 10000th show, and convince everybody I know the value of everything on my table. And if I'm not sure about an item, I would hold it back until the actual show starts.

Also too look the part, buy a cheap suit and don't shower.
