Coin collecting in the comics?

Has coin collecting ever made an appearance in the funny pages? It seems that in 100-plus years of cartooning in America, the coin-collecting hobby would have turned up at least once or twice. Everything else has --- talking cats and dogs, kings, wizards, cavemen, the French Foreign Legion, superheroes, Vikings, etc.

If you are considering Batman comics, then consider "Two Face".

That's not the funny pages, though.

Scrooge McDuck, with his storerooms of gold coins... yes, that's a good example. He would swim in them.

And Two-Face had a Peace dollar, didn't he?

Now that I think of it, there may have been some coin collections in the Richie Rich comics...

    Hmmm…do I sense a new numismatic product?

“Dynamic Dave” featuring the daring feats of Dynamic Dave as he vanquishes whizzers, exposes the evil Putty Monster and defeats the dastardly Dr. A.T., nemesis of all Coindom.

Follow Dynamic Dave as he faces down the forces of evil in the great “Dipping Vat Adventure.” Join him as Dave explores hidden aqua treasure and saves the beautiful Nell from a watery grave in “Saving the SS Rancine.” Watch in amazement as Dynamic Dave defeats the dreaded sea monster who protects a king’s ransom in gold.

All this and more in the very first issue of “D-y-n-a-m-i-c / D-a-v-e -- Super Coin Guy”

    OK—that might be a bit too dramatic…..

It is cheating, but I sort of amended a comic book frame the other day. I will confine it to this thread.

There was a Beetle Bailey comic years ago where a soldier sold Beetle a penny for a dime. He made the deal then mentioned that the guy was really nice for selling his 1955 doubled die for a dime. I don't know the year it came out, but remember seeing it.

Perhaps because there's nothing "comical" about coin collecting. image

To get back to the OP's question.
I can't remember exact details, but, Scrooge McDuck is one (and not for his money bin....there have been a few, over the years, where he has 'talked' about a coin collection or at least, rare coin or two).
There have also been others that have been about cursory coin collections (ie...not the main characters but rather, a robbery of such or someone else's).
Memory isn't so great these days, but I think it would have been Flash and maybe Batman that I recall these in.

I'm sure there have been others.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

On a related note, I'm not sure if it's a myth or not, but I've heard that coin dealer's put ads in comic books to buy 55DDO Lincolns after they came out, hoping for kids to check their change and then sell a 55DDO they found to the dealer.

Many many years ago, one of the newspaper comics had somebody with a bag of 1804 dollars. Lil Abner, I believe. It would have been around 1970, give or take a few years.
  • There was a strip, Latigo, years ago that several times showed territorial double eagles being used. Clark, Gruber & Co. I believe.

Scrooge McDuck had a lucky dime that he kept under the highest security in his vault. It was what he attributed all of his wealth to. I think it was his first dime he earned as a boyscrooge.

Lil' Abner, Latigo and Beetle Bailey. Cool. Surprising what comes out of some threads.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
