Have I just moved up or moved down the numismatic totem-pole?

MikeInFLMikeInFL Posts: 10,188 ✭✭✭✭
For the first time in my numismatic career, I have had a dealer contact me directly with three of his NEWPs and let me have first shot at them.

Now most people would view this as a wonderful occurrence -- all my efforts at working with a small group of dealers and treating them how I wish to be treated have started to bear some "first shot" fruit. However, my paranoid, self-depreciating nature said to me, "The dealer thinks he has a sucker on the other end and looks at me as a quick way to dump a few coins -- be careful!"

What do you think? Have I moved up or down the numismatic totem-pole? Is being offered first shot at coins a good sign or a bad sign?

Just wondering...Mike

Perhaps all the other suckers...ahem...valued clients...are either broke or already turned the coin down?

A lot of my favorite coins have been first shots, or close to first shots. A lot of good material gets traded that way. Just go in with your eyes open and you will be fine.

Are you the first guy or the 300th guy he called offering first shot?

How do you know you were really first? image

In most cases, this means that the dealer considers you to be relatively loyal and easy to deal with, and he has a pretty good idea of what are your likes/dislikes. Don't let the cynic in you spoil it.

Being paranoid is probably correct in this situation. I suspect their regular "first shot" folks are out of money and out of the market.

No, you weren't the fourth one I called, honest.

<< <i>Are you the first guy or the 300th guy he called offering first shot? >>

    To clarify....

I would presume, from the way the e-mail was worded, that I was the first and only collector offered first shot. This is from a guy who is known by everyone I've spoken about him to as a straight shooter (and, incidentally, part of the reason I choose to work with him).

...but you do raise a good point that the paranoid in me can understand....Mike

So did you buy any of them?
If not, they may be the last time you're called first.

I liked one of the three and I'm headed over to the PO to pick up the coin now. I'll let you know later tonight what I decide. image

I agree with RYK. Take it as a good sign...wait and see if you are offered first shot on another coin in the not-too-distant future.

Did you buy one of the coins? This may have an impact on whether or not you are offered first shot again. image

You stated he was a "straight shooter". Why would he change that now? image First shot is cool and doesn't happen to me very often, so I enjoy the moment. image

Was the dealer in a "first strike" slab? If not, you might not have been his first.

Edited: Oh, yeah, but "first strike" doesn’t really mean "first strike" so it doesn't matter anyway....Hope you got a good deal, and the dealer didn't reverse the charges on the call!
