There is no single web site to sell on, the best advise I can give is find a place that is free to list & charges no commissions. Then list all your items, then go out and promote your items.
Its 2009, if you want to sell online you better be willing to "Toot Your Own Horn." If you list an item for sale on a web site(ebay or any other site), you still need to drive traffic to the item. You have to tell as many people as you can where to look. ebay is no longer tooting your horn..............
If I have to toot my own horn, I'm not going to pay a site to just for hosting the item for me and pay a commission if it sells. I'm probably not alone in this thought process. This is one of the reasons I started CZ.
To give you an example the top seller on the auction site is VA Coins, she sells more than I do, but she also puts 1000% more effort into promoting her items through emails, shows, phone calls...........she is out there "Tooting her own Horn."
I can routinely get higher realized prices on eBay but then I have to factor in the fees and the rolling of the dice on whether or not I get a good winner or not. I nearly always list stuff on the BST first and if it doesn't sell there I toss it up on the bay.
Although just an opinion, it's becoming a too busy a place! I'd like to see some kind of division of the BST. Perhaps a classic/modern division for starters. It be totally cool if it were type categorized.
I have bought way, way, way more than I have sold on the BST. There are occasional minor problems, rare major problems, but for the most part, it works pretty well.
BLT???..Oh Buy,Sell,Trade forum........Bought, sold, made offers, rejected offers. 3 buys last few days.0 ebay buys for awhile. No fees, better prices. That "person"Name?..that ripped off several members awhile back gave me pause...but it is fairly safe there...Best deals..Well Jim D, about the cheapest prices
I don't even come close to breaking even on the BST but like others have mentioned once you factor in the e-bay fees, shipping overages and paypal the BST wins.
I am planning on using it extensively. I will shortly offer 2008/07Rev ASE's freshly graded at PCGS at MS69. I'm also looking to buy 19th century coins in the near future.
I buy and sell on the BST just about every week. I haven't used my ebay account in a couple months because of it. It's also a great way to meet board members a little more personaly. I have had no problems at all nor do I have any complaints.
I buy on the BST constantly, have sold with good results. The #1 top venue to go to first. I have also done well with other forums such as CoinTalk and their open forum.......capitol F the bay.
I'm very pleased with buying and selling on the BST. I figure it will be home for me for the foreseeable future. EFF eBay. My best purchase on the BST: A PCGS PR-64 CAM Seated Quarter.
I'm glad to have found this forum. In around three months I've made maybe a dozen hassle free buys, sells, and trades. Several small deals, and a $1K, $2K, and $3K deal. All slightly profitable.
There not too many shows in my area that don't require 6 to 8 hours of driving, so along with ebay, it suits me perfectly.
When I sell I try not to abuse it.
I like the comraderie and peer pressure accountability that ebay certainly lacks.
Where else does a forum member call me on the phone, tells me he found something I would like, throws it into an existing order and tells me to send the check when I can...
Here is the word for word commentary from PM's with forum member Opus from last night and this morning - I hope he doesn't mind!
Opus comments:-------------------- I got burned buying some slabbed Lib nickels (SEGS) from some online dealers and I'm not even going to chance buying raw off of EBay.
BST and the people I've meet so far have done me quite well.
My reply:-------------- A good testimonial to the BST! Some people have told me I'd get more $$ and sell more coins setting up on Ebay, but there are the fees, and all the complaints about non-payer's, or bad checks, or fake MO's, PayPal tricks, etc. A few more bucks isn't worth the headache to me. Besides, I also enjoy the rapport and shared knowledge with guys here. It's like big cyber club! Greg
I love selling on the BST. Usually you have serious buyers who will pay top dollar for nice stuff. I have never had any trouble unloading stuff on the BST. I have gained several gems buying there, too.
I love the BST. I've sold hundreds of coins there over the past four years, and bought a few dozen at least. Some general observations ...
Factoring in fees, etc., you can often do better than ebay, while letting the buyer have it for less than they'd have paid there. Win / win.
Truly nice coins at reasonable prices tend to move quickly.
Ordinary, generic, interchangeable coins tend to languish, unless you price them very attractively.
Whether it is a $2 coin or a $2,000 coin, the buyers here tend to be selective; quality is important.
Rare specialty type of material might do better with a wider audience. Things like better dates in 19th century series might sit for quite a while on the BST, even if your offering price is low. This type of material has done better for me on ebay or sold to dealers.
80% of the time it is the first place I offer something for sale. That doesn't mean everything sells there, but it is often the first, best option.
Just purchased from Meltdown (above us here in the post list) . . . I agree on the statement it is a nice way to meet like-minded buyers and sellers. The BST has it's own morals, and they are high. It is similar to the old west where you could settle a deal on a handshake and the other guy would make good, no matter what. I have yet to hear of any post where a BST transaction went bad. I purchased my PCGS Hawaiian Commem here . . . and a couple others. It may not be as versatile or offer as much selection, but BST transactions are clockwork.
By the way . . . Meltdown has some good stuff over there . . . stay away so I can graze at my leisure! :-)
I wouldnt be surprised if BST starts getting famous and is the main draw for new members!

If they would use the same program for the BST that is used in "The Collectors Corner", then maybe I could find something. The way it is now I never find anything there.

I do, you can't beat the price.........

<< <i>I have sold and bought many coins on the BST board with no problems. >>
Ditto...
<< <i>I like the fact that it's free, but widgets and bullion tend to do better on the BST than rare(r) date collector coins. >>
Rare date better coins still sell better with high end dealers who pay a premium for quality.
Generally, it's easy to complete a transaction once it gets started though.

But like most coin venues -- you have to wade through a lot of cra to find the occasional pearl.
