Poppage Time: Good But Oh So Tough!

Well, here is the last batch I sent in under the January Special. It sat for awhile before it was posted as received, but the grading was then pretty fast. These were some of my best and I thought there were about six sure 9's. The 8.5's were among those six. I can't complain too much because for 1950's baseball these are nice grades but it just seems to me that the graders are a little tougher than a year or two ago. These turned out better than my first two submissions from the January Special. I picked up about a dozen of these at last year's National Convention. The 1963 Tigers Team was a beauty but I suspected it might be trimmed so I am not surprised. But the 1957's were really nice cards in my opinion and I am surprised I didn't get a 9 or two among them. The first two cards (Kaline and Roberts) got what I expected as did many of the 8's. It is just so hard to get a 9 on vintage material. I am happy overall and I will say that this is a good example of grading consistency.

Very nice grades ! I'm still waiting on a January Special logged in 1-21 of ( 24 ) cards ! Nice turnaround time ! Did you pay premium prices for the cards that you purchased at the National or did you get them for near mint prices ?

Those must be beautiful cards! Great job!

P.S. My 2 cents: With a submission of that many quality vintage cards, I would have asked for a "minimum grade of nine" on those six cards.

Maybe three would have graded 9, or maybe all 6? image
  • I wish I had of had some cards that nice to send in!! Looks like you did really well on your 50's stuff to me. I got one 8.5 and a few 8's - also had some 8oc's that I was sure were coming.

    Robbie:
I got about 7-8 of the cards from as dealer who had purchased a 1957 set raw. He pulled the stars and let me look through the rest of them. I paid 75% Beckett for them. The rest that I got at the National were from various dealers (1958's - 1959's) and paid Beckett or a little less. I often ask dealers if they have purchased any sets lately because I am looking for commons. I have raw sets from 1954 up in NM-NM+ condition but grade any that I think are better than that. A lot of dealers are willing to turn over cards from big purchases quickly rather than sit on them or pick out the best for grading while at the show. It's getting more difficult but every year I am able to find enough nice stuff to make my trip to the National worthwhile.

    rd:
I hadn't thought of the minimum grade approach. I have only done that on some crossovers I sent in, never on raw submissions. A good thought. Thanks.

Wow. now that is how you do it. I just wish you had some more 57's in there. Not a one I needed to compl;ete my set.
