Well ... I finally broke down for a ... Goetz Medal

The one I won ...

GERMANY 1927D 5 Mark Von Hindenburg Pattern Silver Proof

Which, for my first one, I hope I did well ... at least I should see once I have it in hand.

Unfortunately, I also had one that got away ...

GERMANY 1928 5 Mark Von Hindenburg Pattern Silver XF+

Which might have been interesting, but hopefully I came out for the better ...

Here's hoping it's as nice as the pics make it out to be! If so that's a great one image

These are somewhat common, but I'd say that price isn't too bad at all image

That's what I'm hoping to find out when it arrives ... tho' it might wind up getting encapsulated ATS since I don't think PCGS handles these.

They did encapsulate other patterns from Goetz like the 331G2. Yours would be 327aG1 and they'd have to make some sort of convoluted argument why yours does not qualify (unless it's too large). Well, coming to think of it, they do not have to make any arguments at all, since it's their party. image

I was surprised that it had arrived when I got home ... would guess it is in the PR63-64 range due to what appears to be some light wear on the obverse ... probably from being stored in a coin cabinet over the years. As to PCGS grading the coin, well it appears to be the same size as a standard German 5 Mark coin of that era, so that should not be a problem. Guess it all depends upon what mood they are in ...

Sorry to burst your bubble but you were snookered. This is a medal (+1.000.000) struck after Goetz's design wasn't chosen for the new five mark piece...to cut his losses it was changed into a commemorative medal that did very well as it sold very cheap. A pattern would need to have the FÜNF REICHSMARK around the perimeter on the reverse and yours doesn't. Your winning bid wouldn't even be close to an opening bid on an actual 'proben' piece. Sorry....

Even for a medal, still don't mind all that much as I figured the seller either really didn't know what they were selling or purposefully juiced the description to help with the final value of the piece. Was more interested in the actual design than anything else ... tend towards designs that I find interesting on foreign coins rather than collecting an entire series.

    Edited to add ...

Still ... I am suspect of some of the coins that the seller had up for auction in their last batch and they have a few in the current batch that are potentially doctored based on the pictures. But ... I will leave it up to anybody going through their current inventory to decide for themselves ...

image If it is indeed a medal then PCGS likely will not slab it. I still think it's a real nice coin..err.. medal, Goetz's designs were just awesome. I believe Stacks was selling a whole slew of medals of his at some point and I had a ton on the watch list... then couldn't get to a computer to make my final bids (didn't matter, most sold for well above what I would have been willing to pay). If you're into it check out the two books from Kienast (ANA has them).

Apparently someone else likes the design too ...

GERMANY 1927D 5 Mark Von Hindenburg Pattern Silver Proof

This one went for quite a bit more than what I paid for mine.

I always worry about aspencoins' photos. They seem to always use lots of light and it washes out the details/blemishes. I am sure they are trustworthy, but the photos are lacking the true look of the coin. -Dan
