My dealer of nearly 30 years. He was sitting in front of a massive pile of sterling flatware, candleabra, snifters--a pirate and his treasure. All of it being shipped off today to the refinery. You hate to see stuff like that go, but there wasn't much I'd have wanted just as a piece of silver.
Asked if he had anything "else". He said "10 oz silver bar". I asked the maker, he said englehard. Asked how much, he scrambled back into the vault and tossed it to me "$160". It had a 100 oz twin that I sold the second they walked in--which was just a few minutes ago.
I bought the bar, feeling stupid for paying that much for silver. But sometimes you just know emotions don't matter in the long run. Asked how often he saw sterling like his pile come in. He said recently he's done that much a day.
Wanna see something cool? He said. Whipped out a cashiers check for $97,000. Payment for 100 krugerrands that were coming in that afternoon. He's already sold them, too, and the buyer would be there a few minutes after the coins arrived. $20 per coin, a cool $2000 for shuffling paper.
Worth $160?

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

$160 for the silver is average. Goes around $160-170 on the bay. It would sell at $160 on the BST in a few minutes.
What a Great description of a Pawn Shop Owner !!!
<< <i>I called my dealer just now to see what he was paying for junk silver (not that I need any). His quote was 10.6 times face. >>
What he was paying, or what he was selling for?
