Wonder why the Spanish would choose to strike trade dollars at their colony?

This is the reason the 1817-S is one of the most intriguing issues of United States numismatic history.
  • It must be made from some super-rare alloy. It only weighs 18.8 grams image

  • I'm amazed that all of you have thus far failed to notice that it's also the ultra-rare low 7 variety. I think it should command a healthy premium over the usual inverted s variety, too.

Sorry, that is not a genuine 1817-S. It is obviously an altered 1877-S.

A genuine 1817-S can only be found in the King of Siam's Dad set.

In 1817, S stood for the Salem Mint, which apparently only struck a few dollars. You could say the Salem Mint was ahead of its time...

Wait, does iron alloy with lead? Better check if it's radioactive... those toxic waste disposal guys are mighty clever. If it glows in the dark it's a good hint.

That is not the "Low 7" variety.
It is the "High 181" variety.

I think that the obvious harsh cleaning will keep it out of a top-tier holder, though.
