MISCUT Qualifier by PSA

Just got back half of the cards I submitted in the January Special. When PSA gives a "MISCUT" qualifier, they don't holder the card?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they can't, sometimes they don't.

Doug - sometimes they can't holder it. If it's not cut square it's a MC and a voucher like you got. I've had success sending cards like that to BVG to get slabbed (if all you want is the card slabbed). The last one was a 68 clemente psa mc not holdered, BVG 7.5 NM+

  • It may depend on the rarity of the card, too. One of my '15 CJs was deemed to be miscut, but I had requested that any cards that failed to receive a number grade be authenitcated, and it was slabbed. If you ask ahead of time as a contingent, or if you follow up with a representative once the card has been returned to you -- to include a photo -- they may or may not grant your request the next time around. It's worth a shot, depending on how badly you want it graded.

  • I hear they are rejecting more and more cards as miscut, but no one knows why

Had a card that looked fine, but it was returned not holdered MC.

Sent it in again and it came back MC again. If the card is trapezoidy, they can't holder it without damaging it.

I had a nice o/c 1961 Mantle that PSA would not holder last year. I sent it to SGC and it got an 84. Go figure!

also any cards with an irregular cut like a bat ear will get the MISCUT and returned , I have a few of these on 67 red sox stickers , they must have cut the stickers with the same roller so you get a lot of wavy cuts on an edge because the stickers are so flimsy.

the miscut qualifier is when the card is off-center 100/0 or more but square.

Now that I look at it ... above the letter "I" in Batting the edge rises a bit and then slowly comes back in.

WATCH OUT CARD, HERE COMES DUTYMON!!!!!

Your was not technically given a qualifier. Like 7MC, the MC is the qualifier...but you still need the 7. Yours was rather graded "MISCUT."

What is the diff between a MISCUT and a #'ed MC?

As noted, they will often "MISCUT" a card if they do not feel comfortable slabbing it. In a few other cases I have seen where the card is possibly trimmed. Like the ARod RC a few weeks ago on this forum....but that is the rarity.

There's too much cardboard on the top middle right of that batting leaders card.

It will not fit into a PSA holder.

The difference is one is a qualifier the other is not.

The qualifier one will get holdered the other won't

You will get a voucher though.

Every once and a while people should go and read the PSA standards page.

(Not saying anyone here in particular)

Agreed wolf ... that's what I had said before, the card extends outward above the middle of the word BATTING. Makes sense that it will not fit into a normal size holder. BUT ... why not grade it and put it in a larger holder?

My experience is that they dont holder a miscut card whether it will fit in the holder or not. If the border was not cut straight at the factory for some reason even though the centering is good it is still a miscut and will not get holdered.

Depends on the card too. If you send them a rare issue card they will find a way to holder it.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I have one card in particular that has been graded miscut twice and a 5 once, so they can be holdered sometimes.

There's a significant difference between MISCUT and the MC qualifier. A MISCUT card is typically rejected and returned unholdered because it is not symmetrical. This is often the result of a "wavy" cut or excessive diamond cut. Such cards are not considered "altered" by PSA and thusly, PSA offers a voucher.

The MC qualifier is typically for a card that is miscut and results from either a portion of the card missing, a portion of another card showing, or a combination of both. Most often, if the border on the front or back (most common) is intruded by the cut, then an MC qualifier is given.

Hope this helps answer the question.
