Testing the ebay waters

Listed an item on ebay just to test the traffic volume..................

1 day left and there has been 12 visitors.

I remember when there would have been over 100 visitors going into the last day.

What type of item? I know you dont want to link due to spam and it would mess up your numbers but I am curious what type of coin.

I'd be willing to wager that your traffic volume has more to do with what you're selling rather than overall eBay volume.

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

Hmm 1 item listed. Been a long time since you've listed. Common silver.

    Yup, eBay is b0rked.

I would imagine you will see plenty of traffic the last day.

That was my thought, too. Average stuff seems to get ignored until the last few minutes, at least if I'm selling it.image

I too dipped into the bay waters to test. I have been way from the bay for almost two years and wanted to see how hard it was to post... It took all of about three minutes to put an auction up... Truthfully, I was baffled by how easy it was with all the complaining I have been reading about.

That said, I understand that the complaints were not really about the listing process in that the fees are outrageous and the feedback process is a crock now.

I listed a set of Simpsons Pez dispensers. I am not concerned with how much they sell for, the auction was started at .01 if I sell it for .01 + shipping, the mission of cleaning the house has worked (Thus the giveaways, there will be many more in the future, for info see signature block below).

    Good luck with your auctions,
    Ray
  • I have noticed buyers seem to lurk until the last day and even the last 2 hours. I have had items hang at $2-5 for 6.5 days and then sell for over $100 in the last couple of hours.

Depends on the psyche of the buyer and whether they want to snipe the coin or max bid the coin right off the bat

How about 2 minutes! I never put my final bid in (when I was buying) before that.
I was bidding on about 20 coins once that closed about every 2 minutes.
I had 40 windows open, 1 for watching and 1 for my final bid.
Surprisingly, I won almost all of them at bargain prices. Fun and games.

Feebay has rearranged the listings and their exposure. It is possible that your item could close and never make it to the first page in Best Match. Actually, it's more than likely.

  • I had been noticing that a good number of my auctions never got any action until about 24-48 hours before the close. I wonder now if that has something to do with the new search function? If so, why run auctions for longer than 3-days?

I'm seeing auctions where someone doesn't even bid on 99c items, and that's for a piece of silver. Used to be, all 99c items got opening bids, at least, early on.
  • Do a fair amount on the bay and unless you do the featured listing the traffic does not come before the end last 1-2 hours, could almost do a 3 day auction just to cut the wait down.

  • Results are in.

Auction ended for a Walking Liberty Half VF condition, with 35 unique visitors.

    Coin sold for 3.58 + 2.00 shipping.

If I had sold it to the local dealer for $4.50, I would have more money in my pocket, if you figure in the time, ebay fees, paypal fees.......

  • it really depends on what you have listed. i have one running now that has 159 views, 29 watchers and 13 bids.
    my ebay items BST transactions/swaps/giveaways with: Tiny, raycyca,mrpaseo, Dollar2007,Whatafind, Boom, packers88, DBSTrader2, 19Lyds, Mar327, pontiacinf, ElmerFusterpuck.
  • For a single $5.00 item, eBay doesn't make since to me. In your case you would have been better off selling to the dealer for $4.50. The buyer paid $5.50 to get it to his house. I bought 20 of these yesterday for $5.00 each from Craigs list...met the guy about a mile from my house. My point is; on single (or multiple) low value items there may be better selling mediums other than eBay.

I have been looking to buy silver on eBay for months, but have given up due to the crazy bidding. Craigs list is best for me. I've bought silver from 100 miles away and it still beats eBay...just a nice motorcycle ride and cheap on gas.

A couple of comments. First I agree its the item listed, I have been getting plenty of traffic. However, most doesnt come to the last day of even last 12 hours. Most fo the time I find that 5 day lisitings are a waste of time, just run 3 day or even a 1 day on the right day and come out as good. For scarcer stuff where I need maximum exposure I still run for 5 days to give everybody a chance to see it who might have an intrest. Prices realized on several things are softer, but not everything!!

It's the item listed....why would anyone search for that coin in that grade?
For items like that, on ebay, you are basically selling to people who are buying it for silver content...in that case, you would likely be better off clumping them together.

Now, try selling something that people actually want, and worth more than $5, and see how it sells....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

DUIGUY, I would be delighted to send the PEz to you for one cent. Thanks for the bid though I have to tell you, there are half a dozen peeps spying that auction image (Probably because they have some to sell too).

    Thank my friend,

  • You're testing eBay volume with one item? Not quite fair, is it? As others said, so much more comes into play than just 'does ebay suck?'.

    Quite a generalization you're suggesting.............
