Thinking about having my Muhammad Ali signed glove painted, opinions solicited on price

I've had this signed Ali glove for about 15 years now ever since he signed it right in front of me:

I've always been a fan of the painted stuff that Upper Deck Authenticated used to put out, IE, jerseys, balls, etc. So I contacted Jolene Jessie (who was the artist that painted a lot of the Upper Deck authenticated painted stuff) and asked her what she would charge me to do a Muhammad Ali painting on my glove, and she quoted $300.00 for something that would end up like this: (this is one of her past pieces she did, it's not mine)

Do y'all think that's a decent price for that type of work? If it was y'alls glove, would you get it painted? Do you know anyone that does comparable work that might be cheaper?? When you think of Ali, what image immediately comes to your mind? (IE, is there some more recognizable poses than this one)

I personally like the idea of having her paint it, I'm just trying to decide if I'm getting ripped or not on the price. I know if I tried to paint Muhammad myself, it would just kinda look like a stick figure image

Thanks,

Mike

I think that is a great price for that kind of work? I think it really adds something to the piece. I assume the glove was not a glove used by Ali at anytime.

Mike, I also believe it would look great!
  • I think that price is an absolute bargain, and I hope you do it!

I may be the only one, but I like the glove the way it is. I have signed gloves that Winky Wright and Joe Calzaghe signed for me, so I know what signed gloves look like in person. It makes it more of an art piece than a piece of sports memorabilia if that makes sense.

Mike...I was thinking a grand would be reasonable...then I read your quoted price...I'd take her up on that. I'm a no name artist and I barely do commissioned pieces for that little.

Mike ... is that the Ali/Liston fight?

That's hand painted? That is an unreal picture! $300.00????? Geeze, you pay more than that for someone to sign their name on a piece of cardboard.

Are you keeping it for yourself? If it fits in with your collection I say HELL YEAH! It will look awesome.

PS I am going to PM you an ALI auto ... please tell me your opinion.

I think the glove you posted looks great and $300 seems like a reasonable price. Just curious, how does the painting process work? Type of paint, etc? Have you seen one that is several years old to see how the paint holds up over time. I was wondering on a glove if it eventually cracked or chipped.

  • Mike, Since this is a piece you've had and cherished for so long, you should do it if you like it, and if you like it, $300 is a very good price and knowing that will make you feel even better about your finished piece. You won't regret ever spending $300 on this, no matter what or if any effect on it's future value. Do it.

I like the auto on the glove by itself. What I think would be cool is to get the other glove painted and display them as a set. Do you have the other glove? If not is it something that could be matched up?

  • personally, i would leave the glove as is beacuse its the same type of glove boxers used and still use today. Its more of a Classic look imo

I think the glove should be left as it is. Otherwise to me it's a cartoon piece, not art.

Thanks for the opinions so far. Please keep them coming. I went back and looked and I misread Ms. Jessie's pricing email to me, it's $300.00 per pose, so the glove as shown would be 2 $300.00 poses for a total of $600.00.

I might have a big facial portrait done on the end and that way it would only be $300.00.

Jim, you raise some good questions on how it would hold up over time, I need to inquire about that. I hadn't considered that, I had just assumed it would be permanent but I need to make sure.

Doug, PM sent on your questions.

If I wanted to turn my classic collectible into an oddball novelty item,
I guess paying an artist $300 for the job is reasonable.

I guess painting it does not really "ruin" it, but it might shrink the
market for it. OTOH, if the artist was SUPER famous, there might
    be some value-added.

I would not be interested in a painted glove, but some folks would.
