What is this?? Jefferson nickel ..... help please

This has been in my album for 30 years and I have no clue what caused the extra metal on jefferson's lower cheek. Any thoughts???

Thanks Robb, I had always thought of Cuds as on the outside rim. But after looking at the definition of a cud, I believe you are probably right.

By definition, a cud MUST involve the rim of the die. It's hard to say without seeing the coin in hand, but a likely possibility is a "sunken die".
