Question for the esteemed eBay sellers re: PCGS Genuine slabs

I'm curious to know what real world results you have seen selling coins in the new PCGS Genuine holders.

Your opinion on how good the results have been versus selling the coins raw, or in other problem holders, would be appreciated.

I have no experience as a seller of PCGS Genuine coins, but as a buyer, I am more comfortable buying these than raw ones or ones in NCS or ICGNACS problem holders. If other potential buyers feel the same way, that should translate to higher prices.

As a buyer I like them. Have not tried to sell yet.

I like being able to form my own opinion on grade/eye appeal and make that the bargaining chip vs. what PCGS or another 3rd part service says with a net grade that usually has no real meaning.

I've not sold any but I have watched a few.
In my own way of viewing it, I would pay more for one in a PCGS Genuine holder than I would raw IF it was heavily counterfeited or a more expensive coin (not talking w/ toning but just in general, such as seated dollars, some half cents/large cents, etc).

I wouldn't be that interested in buying a lincoln (aside from svdb or 55ddo...though, I have those in graded holders already and wouldn't be that interested in them even in genuine) or franklin or kennedy, or any other more modern coin.

I think those are in genuine largely for AT, or QT, than they are counterfeit or ED.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • This TPG thing is way outta control...

I remember when I was in baseball cards......NONE were graded......wait.....I am going to start a new thread....

Bochiman has a good point. I would never consider a Genuine slab for much more common coins. I was thinking it is good for Early 1800's gold and silver.

So would that mean a price level or a date cutoff?

I'd lean more toward rarity then price. Not sure there would be a date cutoff.

For instance I might consider a 1995-W Silver Eagle with a light spot or two in a Genuine Holder. image
  • I have no info to share just yet... but I can check back into this thread in about ten days.

I just consigned some Genuine Holders to be offered on ebay. They will be listed later this week ... I must admit, I am curious to see how they are received.

I found this one while shopping on eBay. Not a bad price for a 14D that cannot be graded.

OK... back with some results. There are 10 Genuine Holders ... these are coins I had submitted raw, fully expecting Genuine holders...and then consigned to this seller. Five went off last night and five last week...

I have my opinions regarding what I learned here... yet I'm curious to hear yours, as well. I certainly did better than I would have raw IMHO... they were not selling on the bourse floors.

My only misgiving is that I now predict (sadly) that at least half of these coins will be cracked out and offered on ebay (or elsewhere) raw... but I have no control over that and neither does PCGS. I believe that the ebay seller and I did the right thing...

    So what do you think?

Lee gave me some advice awhile back when i was posting some coins for you all to grade..He told me being new I should probably stick to buying graded coins until i can get more educated and know what it is I'm buying.
In that sense i think the grading companies provide a huge service and I hate to admit it, I still mostly buy graded coins (NGC-PCGS).. That being said I have bought some PCGS graded coins(I bought on scam bay) that sure look questionable to me as far as grade. So I think newbies will have tendencies to go for graded coins and the experts still get that kick out of finding a raw gem on their own..IMHO..

It's interesting how PCGS market grades almost everything except possibly the top 5% for each date in a series (called technical grading)but yet there is no "value to grade" ratio going on with the "Genuine" service. Who makes that decision in "what it's worth" coins in "Genuine" holders?

No one submits coins for downgrading. Ergo: over graded junk and mistakes remain in holders.
